NHL 17 Patch (Nov. 21, 2016) - No Network Performance Updates?!

Just read the patch notes and there's nothing in regards to Network Performance improvements. I would like to think that this would be at the top of their list of things to fix. So disappointing. What a poorly run development team.

It would be nice to know if they're at least still looking into this or not.

Replies

  • Ben said the list included SOME of the things they were currently looking to fix. Whether that means that this is one patch out of several they're looking to deliver or that the list posted isn't 100% complete, we'll have to wait and see.

For my part i'm more disappointed that there's no mention about the goalies having their pads float above the ice (where a puck can go under them), nor is there anything regarding a toning down of the puck holder's lateral acceleration.

While I too would prefer to see network fixes or remedies in place first, I don't mind so much with what is to be in the patch. At least it addresses a number of issues with gameplay, especially with goalies that has been groaned on about for quite a long time. Hopefully their fixes make it somewhat playable for you guys. The performance issues (props and banners in the way, etc) were also a major fix that was needed.

As a consumer, it would be nice and justified to expect to have everything fixed at once, but let's face it, it isn't gonna happen that way, with any game you get especially yearly released ones.

Hopefully now they can focus (if they haven't been already with a full team assigned) to the glaring network issues at hand, or at least tell us why they are happening. Let's remember that they aren't the fullest of staffed teams, so things they can look into may not be as in-depth as they'd / we'd like. The devs have bosses and deadlines that they have to adhere to and they don't get to make the decisions that ultimately **** us off in the community.

If they can simply stop NA players from being matched with Euros and vice versa, that would be a good quick fix at least (for EASHL). There is never a time where this sort of matchup should happen.

So before you guys start slamming the devs as being lazy, stupid, unaware or whatever just keep in mind they're probably more frustrated than you are that their work gets belittled so quickly and easily and can't address problems as they'd like to.

  • We get a patch about once a month. There is no mention of any network related issues being fixed so it looks like we're waiting another month for any news.
Like I've said before, last year it took them 5 months for them to release the patch to make online playable. Whoever works on the network code there is really bad at their job.
    How is this acceptable?

Maybe because that's how long it took to fix the problem? As a technician myself, I'd love to fix everything that my customers throw at me right away. But some problems are more difficult to solve than others. Sometimes you have to tweak things, try them out, tweak them again, try them out... Until you can solve it. It can take days, weeks and sometimes, yes, it can even take months.

Be sure that if it takes a long time to fix something, it's because IT TAKES A LONG TIME TO FIX IT, not because the devs don't want to.

  • The single biggest problem in the game are the poor servers.

Yet EA has never done anything to fix them even though they advertise every year the promise to fix them.

How they can get away with the constant lies about fixing the servers is accepted is beyond me .

I have had enough of the lies this is my last year for sure.
  • Which network issues are you guys referring to? For me and my EASHL team, the issues are mostly with the game crashing and being unable to find opponents even when some are online and looking for an opponent at the same time as we are. In-game lag isn't anything as bad as the dreadful captain lag of pre-patch NHL 16, although it does often feel rather sluggish for sure (despite the fact that we're in Europe and play against other Euros only).

Same problems here. No inputlag or bad connections, ping is always the same 30ms... BUT the sluggish gameplay aka "fatman lag" is a true pain in the **** to play with. Especially in challenge club games. Normal eashl games feel a bit smoother though.
  • Yeah and the past couple weeks have been getting worse. Game is literally unplayable on a decent wired connection.
  • There are major network issues and they seem to be getting worse. Last night the team we were playing was on a delayed penalty and they pulled the goalie for an extra attacker. After controlling the puck for a minute the game did the old "faceoff loop" and put the faceoff in their zone, with no penalty and.....THEIR GOALIE WAS STILL PULLED! So they lined up in the faceoff circle with 6 skaters and no goalie.

Then we played a game where all 6 of us were literally at different times in different periods, but each of us were skating on the ice by ourselves separately. ****?

Our West team keeps getting matched up with east teams and we are ALWAYS the away team.....even when were home, we are home on east coast servers. Im really starting to lose my patience.
  • The patch notes doesn't mention anything about HUT removing LPS or the other changes made in HUT. Anyone else notice any other changes not mentioned in the patch notes?
  • Maybe some of you need to upgrade your internet?
  • Maybe some of you need to upgrade your internet?

Stop trolling. When 4 of us from California (along with 1000s of other clubs complaining) are getting put on east coast servers when we select best game region, it is a problem on their end. Not to mention the desyncing issue, which is also a problem on their end. If you have ever played more than 1 installment of this game you would already know the major faceoff loop issues that plagued the series.

Let's move away from the 'Get better internet' talk. We all know that the connectivity issues effect some users with good internet as well.

Don't forget about the "git gud scrub" argument as well.

The online scrub's requiem... Always a classic.
  • Thats to bad you guys suffer with the fat man lag.

Have only experienced this maybe twice when my ping was over 60ms! So I just backed out because this happens so rarely for me.

You must unlearn what you have learned!

Give me a break. Last night, I got matched up with the same team in HUT 7 times in a row. The "Network Connection" icon showed that the connection was just Fair (or sometimes Poor), so each time I quit out without ever hitting A. Yet the game kept matching me up with the same team over and over again, even though we were guaranteed to have a bad experience.

This isn't new. It happens all the time in HUT. And it's a complete joke. If I quit out of a matchup, that team should go to the end of the queue. I shouldn't be matched up against them for a very long time, if ever. I definitely shouldn't be matched up against them 7 or 8 times in a row when I'm quitting every time.

This isn't a hard problem to fix. It's an insanely easy problem to fix -- add a line that says "If quit against Team X, then do not match with Team X again." Yet we're still dealing with this crap every single night.

We see this a lot. There's many users who don't have issues at all, or rarely. I'm in that same boat. I hardly see any connection issues.

After vehemently denying there was an issue on EA's part - I opened my mind and helped a few users here privately who were having issues. It became clear that their networks were in good shape, ISP speeds seemed solid (after testing) and little to no jitter. Any connectivity related spikes or dips were comparable to my own - so the effect on EA should be negligible.

This helped me quickly realize that there's more at play here than even I (as a career network specialist) wouldn't be able to troubleshoot without diving deep in to the engineering behind EA's matchmaking.

So there's definitely something up here. I used to be one of those 'it doesn't happen to me so it must be the user's issue' type of guys, but it's clear I was being rather defensive without actually hearing those out who had issues.

I think more users should report issues with as much detail as possible if they have problems. It goes a long way in helping the guys at EA figure things out I'm sure.

    Interesting,

One guy on my club is from Edmonton, and Im from Calgary we both have shaw internet and the same speed 150 mb/s. We normally are within 1 ping of each other, like 99% of the time. 24-26ms for west games, amd 34-36 for EAST games.

And its interesting because the times I had the huge ping (60+), he was fine. And its been the opposite where his ping is 60+ and mine is fine.

But again, it happens so rarely, so we dont make an issue of it

Another interesting thing I have noticed when I play VS, most likely easterners I will get pings up to 55-60 and wont even notice it during game, faceoffs fine, puck control etc are fine. But if that was club, Im sure it would be an issue.

    LOL!

If you're too beeitch to play someone don't back out and search immediately again like a moron. Wait 2 mins like a good little beeitch and you won't match again because that guy will have already matched with someone else..

Use your head, eh bud? o:)

Actually, the easy fix would be to put in a filter for searching games that lets users choose the connection grade they're willing to put up with, from one to five bars.

I don't play HUT anymore, but I do remember when that used to happen. It was annoying to always get matched up with the same bad connections. What I would do at that point is back out and wait for about 30 seconds before trying to search again. I'd always find someone new then.

    @Workin_OT

Back to being a dewshbagg I see... That didn't last very long.
