Defensemen and the broken game

I know its hard to believe since this game works so perfectly but there are serious issues with the defensemen.

1) Throwing the puck back to the point is problematic:
a. If you pass the puck up the boards there is a likelihood the point man will not hold the boards and receive the pass. This is frustrating since he's there and just doesn't make an effort to extend his stick out to keep the puck in the zone. Oh well, so much for sustain puck pressure.
b. Okay, so the point man gets the pass on the point, why is he stuck in the ice, like the "mud" effect, while the defender is closing in to defend. I'm trying to move and yet can't. This appears to be a broken feature, you should be able to move and receive a pass at the same time, shouldn't you?

2) Retrieving the puck in my own end behind the net
a. Why do I always crash into the boards? My controller shakes every time I retrieve a puck behind the net, this happens even when there is no pressure from the opposition. The only way to avoid this is to fluently skate left or right while getting the puck.
3) D-Men randomly skate off for line changes
a. My line changes are set to manual and yet they skate off for line changes. This is especially frustrating when I'm on sustain offensive pressure and there is no point man. What's more frustrating they're not even tired (red bar fatigue).
4) Can't effectively pass puck back and forth between point man
a. So the issue is this, you're playing against a high pressure in your face defense and you need to move the puck fast. Okay, I can do that, NOT. When I try to play catch between my point man they move towards each instead of staying on their side of the ice. This makes it super easy for the defender to cover both point man at the same time.

Thoughts?

  • Yeah that pretty much summarizes a lot of the issues on defense.

Do you invert the handedness of your defense? I've noticed the inverted d miss the puck way more often when you pass back to the point along the boards. They just don't react. Do you prefer to cycle on one side of the ice? You could make that side d man the correct handedness and still have the one timer available on the other side.

I have many problems picking up the puck behind the net. It's gotten to the point that if I'm under pressure I'll ease up and let my opponent get there first so I can pin him and get the puck. It's just a crapshoot as to what happens when you get there.
  • Good points.

I personally love the fact that sometimes when passing the puck with a winger to a Dman who is close to blue line slides few meters backwards when receiving the pass. I'm not sure how heavy puck they are using at NHL level, but unless it's like 30 pounds heavy I really don't understand how that happens.

Even when trying to skate forward with the dman he just keeps sliding backwards out of the zone.
  • I'll never understand why the D-man at the point will leave the side-boards when his teammate has he puck up against the boards in the offensive zone. That is simply fundamental, hockey 101 stuff, the D-man in that situation would stay flush to the boards. Instead the AI has the D-man come off the boards 4-5 feet. Makes no sense.

And I don't understand, in the what, essentially the 7th version of HUT, they have not given us the option to turn-off automatic line changes. I had an instance last night where my AI d-man changed lines with 3 seconds left to go in the period, and directly resulted in the D-man coming onto the ice being out of position and causing a goal against. If I had complete manual control (i.e the don't change lines ever without my say so) over the line changes, I would NEVER change lines with 3 freakin' seconds left in a period, what would be the point?

One of the most annoying things in the game by far lol.
  • The issue of receiving passes and the limited ability to move is not just with point man. It appears this happens when passing the puck to the forwards as well. Another interesting observation, it only appears to be happening when you pass the puck vertically or up and down the ice. When you pass horizontally or left/right the receiving player doesn't have any issue with movement when the puck hits the stick.
  • The accuracy of the OG post is at 100% - EA HOCUS POCUS, It's In The Game.
  • Can't utilize effective power play. When passing between point man, skater after passing the puck takes two glides towards the direction of the puck. Abandons his side of the ice, this makes it extremely easy for the defender to cover both point man since they are mere feet away from each other. smh
  • The ai simply receiving passes in general is a problem in this game or even when I select a player the game realising I should be able to pick the puck up and yet the player doesn't it's just one of those things you have to learn how to adjust to the broken game
