Hybrid Controls Still Broken?

I play on PS4 and haven't run into this problem in any of my games (although there are PS4 users reporting the same problem), but when I switch to Xbox One this problem still exists (when it was first reported at launch):

http://answers.ea.com/t5/Bug-Reports/NHL-17-BUG-Hybrid-Controls-Not-Working-when-passing-the-puck-up/td-p/5555134

Hybrid gets no love. First we have line changes/strategies taken away, now the game is literally unplayable on this control scheme.

  • There has been a lack of response to the busted hybrid control issues and I think it's because there will not be a fix at all. Same as last year, still broken and not even fixed with the lousy update that is NHL 17.
It might be that the NHL dev team is so busy working so hard to fix the coach's hair and goalie animations that playability is a distant second. It might be that good playable hockey doesn't matter compared to things like how to get hut packs to sell. I'm glad they added the kazoo goal horn, not sure what I'd do without it. And who cares if buttons don't work as long as they have the ridiculous mascots am I right?!
Look on the bright side, you can get your limited time Christmas collectibles now!!
  • Can we get some kind of response on this? Literally a game-breaking bug for a percentage of the userbase.

Hybrid controls are not broken. Just be careful not to double tap the pass button or the next player will auto pass/dump the puck.
  • Thanks, I've been playing for more than 5 minutes. They are, in fact, broken. Like I've said: I play on PS4 and have had no problems, but as soon as I switch to my Xbox One version, the bug exists. There are plenty of other PS4 users that have experienced this problem, though.
  • Bump. Game-breaking bug. Fix please.
  • Bump.
  • The problem with the "just don't double tap the button" mantra that the drones and bootlickers throw out there is that (on PS4 anyway, I don't know about XBOX) it doesn't always happen. Combine that with the fact that there are situations in a game where you need to pass literally the second the puck gets to a player and that hiring the button just once won't always register for a quick one touch pass, you have to double tap sometimes. Combine this with the fact that you can't do any line changes with hybrid, and they are in fact 100% broken. (Why have they not yet created a coaching profile, where in the menus between games you can set preferences for what lines get priority in certain situations, such as offensive zone/defensive zone, or leading/trailing late etc... This way at the very least you wouldn't have to deal with the computer coach sending out the 4th line repeatedly in the last 5 minutes of a game you trail by a goal. This seems like a no brainer but they haven't updated the in game strategy portion of the game in any significant way in almost 15 years.)
  • Bump until acknowledged. Funny how EA Dev can defend the problems of this game in other threads but can't take two seconds to acknowledge an ACTUAL bug.

A few months ago I had our QA team test around this (when it was first posted on the page you linked to) and we couldn't repro the issue unless the User actually double tapped.

When I saw this thread, I was going to post that but wanted to get them to test again to be sure. I personally play on PS4 at home so wasn't able to do any testing myself when I saw you post this since you feel it may be XB1 only (or at least worse on one compared to the other).

For players to be able to do one touch passes, we do allow you to press pass before you get the puck and trigger a next pass. We have tried different 'black out' periods right after release, etc. in case you double tap but if too long, it doesn't allow you to do quick give and go plays near the net in a scenario such as a 2 on 0.

@NHLDev - Thanks for clarifying that hybrid controls are, in fact, NOT broken. It appears that a few users are in denial and refuse to accept this as an answer.

  • Can we change lines or strategy yet in hybrid controls?
Yeah obviously the double pass was people spamming pass button...
How about a fix for the rest of the stupid game for the love of pete
  • Thanks for the reply. Sincerely.

I have been playing the series for years and can assure you that on some consoles I've played on, the game will just pass ahead when skating up ice using hybrid controls. This phenomenon occurs sometimes long after a pass is made. I'll try to grab a few videos for you!

I, too, have wondered if there are plans to return line changes and strategy changes to the hybrid control scheme? They were removed seemingly for no reason a few years back.

Ok thanks. That is definitely concerning.

Not sure why anything was changed on hybrid controls.

The only work I have requested to be done to them was in regards to fixing conflicts. As an example: not being able to skate backwards and take a slapshot since cancel shot was a conflict.

We know people are requesting to look at both strategies and line changes on that control scheme. No matter what though, there are compromises when you use a scheme where there are two ways to do the same control since you run out of buttons. The dpad is open though so making strategies work would be the shorter road since the functionality is 1:1 with skill stick in that case.

I can't promise any changes though.
  • I appreciate you looking into it. I've been asking each year since they were removed, and this is the first "official" response I've had on the subject. Changing lines and strategies is a fundamental part of controlling the overall hockey experience. Conflicts is certainly a good reason to tweak functionality on the control scheme, but when it was in one year and out the next without anything taking its place, it definitely leaves you scratching your head.

Have you guys considered custom control schemes? This is fairly common in modern gaming and doesn't really leave you open to any kind of "advantage" from player to player. Currently, you let NHL 94 controls players play online against Skill Stick players, and there's clearly an advantage/disadvantage trade-off happening there. I can appreciate the amount of work something like this would take, but it would also alleviate all of the control-related concerns that come up each year. Simply give me the 30 or so button options/combinations, give me a list of the 30 or so different inputs the game allows, and let me go to town!
