Franchise mode: under cap but full roster?

I'm having an issue when trying send players down to the minors and call players up. Says I would be under the salary cap.

However I can't just go sign some random free agent for a ton of money, as when I try to do that they reject the offer because my roster is full.

Trading is out of the question for the same issues.

I'm trying to rebuild my team, and I want to send an old player down to bring up a few rookies. Am I screwed until the off season?

What about trading a player off your roster for a draft pick? That should open up a roster spot for a potential free agent signing.

Trade someone on your farm team for a draft pick, and then sign any crap free agent to like 1 year, $7 million deal and leave him up with your team.
