Can't find opponents

Here's hoping someone can help. I can't for the life of me find an opponent for online shootout, hut or versus play. Only games I can get are EASHL and drop in games - I assume because in those instances I'm not the host?
My NAT is always open. Extremely frustrated...

This game is the most frustrating thing on the planet most days I swear!! All day today it's been taking forever to find a game, and then when you do the network meter is either yellow, red, or fluctuating constantly.

I don't understand why it's so hard sometimes, especially when you have over 1000 players playing in any of the modes most of the time.

I'm on PS4 by the way.
