this does in fact work... only problem with it is like the OP said, you have to position lock mid game.
so here is what you have to do:
1) start game (I wait for opening faceoff)
2) turn off device (your controller)... the game will pause
3) turn back on your device
4) select the correct team
5) Position Lock to the "CO" option
6) hit back to go back to gameplay *** here is where it messes up sometimes
Either the game will resume with all of your players controlled by AI ***OR***
I get this message where it says "Waiting for User" and you cannot back out of the screen. Basically the game freezes. Even if you turn off device again it doesn't allow you to reselect team or change position lock. I even tried turning on a new controller. it seems like a glitch, but the problem is at that point you need to close out game and you get a loss. this happens like 1/5 games in my experience. if anyone can figure out how to fix this when this happens then this method is fool proof.
Like OP said, winning these games are easy, it just takes too much time. I didn't play at all this weekend and still got 25 collectibles.
let me know if anyone has the same problem with game freezing when switching to coach and if you found a solution
its certain players that you have on your team. Bure and one of the hulls freeze every time for me. i did this for about 20 games with all star alumni. It only froze when i had bure or hull.

wow, that's interesting. thanks for the tip
although I am pretty sure I simmed 4 games with Bure on my team
Actually this is more random than anything else. I've played with Bure and Hull. Having said that, there is a work around, the freeze glitch only happens in the first game of the tournament. Once you get through the first game, its smooth sailing. Heres what I do, play the first game, get a lead, rag the puck like a ****. When you win the game, go back to CO position for the remainder of the games.
This is an awesome way to get the DC collections, my stress level has dropped, I do other stuff around the house. This is way worth the time to do. I'm up to 80 DC cards for Malhotra.

agreed. winning the games is easy... but its still 35-40 hours worth of playing to get 100 collectibles. I am up to 40 already since the weekend.
smart thing to play the first game and sim the next 3

I thought so too. It doesn't cut down on the amount of time required to gain 100 DC collectibles but it greatly reduces the amount of time required to sit in front of the screen to do it. I played 350 games of HUT all of last year. I simply wouldn't have the time to get these three DC 92 cards and still be able to enjoy using them. This method will allow me to have all three within a few weeks. Manny is awesome but if you buy in to the Synergy system (and I do) Grossman and Emery are also must-haves. I have Manny and Grossman (also tremendous - reminds me of Flashback Pronger from last year but a bit faster) and I am 16 collectibles in towards Emery.
Some are calling this an exploit but I don't really see it. It is a feature in the game that can be used to obtain untradeable cards. There is no monetary benefit to doing this. All it buys me is valuable time.
Thanks for the work-around Spunky, I wasn't aware the freeze glitch only affected the first game in the series. This is helping reduce my agitation of having to draft more teams when it happens...
I tried doing this but got bored.. Anyone notice that the AI strength varies from game to game like I did? EA Twitter guy denies it though.
you have to understand, the OP and myself aren't doing this for fun. we aren't position locking on coach and sitting there. Usually once I start the game ill switch my tv source to cable and throw on a movie or watch a show and just hit "X" every 10 minutes to resume the period. Or if i have some things i need to do around the house ill let the computer just play.... I pop in with 10 minutes left in 3rd and if I am down I will quickly try to come back and if I am up I will go back to the movie I was watching. and repeat.
we aren't just sitting there watching the computer play LOL... its for people who don't have the extra free time to play and win 100 games (40-50 hours) to get 100 collectibles.
I did this on Sunday and my home was REALLY clean at the end of the day. I wasn't really bored, just didn't have the commitment to do it again... have you noticed anything about the AI varying in strength?

yea definitely... some games my guys will light up Price, other games cant get a puck past Mike Smith.
but at the same time... isn't that the case in real life as well? players aren't always consistent
Just to follow up:
The freeze glitch is prevalent especially after you finish a tourney regardless of how many games you win. To combat this, you will have to play out your first game. As I've stated before the glitch doesn't show up after the first game is complete.
My conclusion, play on coach mode the first go around, if you're starting a new tourney, play first game to its completion before switching up to coach lock for remainder of the tourney.
As the OP stated, if you see things are going your way, take control of the game. I would say this has been well worth it. I was able to salvage a good portion of my games that would probably end up in a lose.
I noticed that in some games both teams would have zero hits and other games the AI would attempt stick lifts, but not every game. There is no strategy setting that impacts this so it's likely the AI difficulty level changing from game to game.
Honestly, I don't watch enough to notice. I put the controller down and leave the screen. I usually set the levels all max for game play, works well for me.

You have to hit "resume" at the end of each period.
