Whats up with defensive teammate a.i.?

Prev1
the a.i. Is so ridiculous! I actually make adjustments and still the same dumb a.i. The cpu only scores on one timers in the slot and defensemen close to the guy taking the shot just turns away from him in the opposite direction what a joke.

  • Wait...there's a problem with the AI in EA NHL?

    Can't be right,

    Please check your sources
  • your better off just never playing with AI than hoping it gets fixxed because lets be real here..... they make choices with the puck that i dont even see bantam teams do because they know its not gonna do anything.
  • dude its HORRENDOUS. So many times on a 1-2 rush, if the puck carrier is coming down the wing and i happen to miss a check, my AI defence which should be able to get him, ends up coming to a full on stop, allowing the guy to get a free breakaway. Happens every game i'd say at least once.....and to add to that, the select player is broken also. So many times I'm trying to select a certain player and it consistently picks a totally irrelevant player.
  • You honestly can't expect that after 25 years of making hockey titles that EA can make AI players play a consistent style of hockey. That's asking a lot here folks..
  • This sounds cliche, but play better D. Honestly, I was struggling earlier this year too and was getting lit up.

I took a few games to work on my defense and I've seen a noticeable change.
  • Most goals I see scored in hut are a player taking advantage of the poor ai, and the fact that they can hold a stick back and not be touched either...

The AI plays behind the net, the boards, the point , the rush, new players coming into the zone absolutely horribly, they hold back better players as you are forced to hold their hand and cover the lanes / players they won't it will bail on ...

A team is only as strong as it's weakest link , the AI holds back skilled players, as they aren't on par ... They can't even do man to man coverage ... Or when they never support you in the offensive zone ... It's hard , coaching doesn't even allow us to control our AI teammates to help us play our game ...

You can play the best d in the world, but again the fact is if the AI isn't playing their man or the lane, you can only do so much , not to mention to have to rely on the game to intercept passes in the lane ... Just ridiculous.

I hate that they changed the range of deking back from how it was in nhl15.

Yup, exactly. You can't play better defense if you are completely helpless during certain situations. There is no play better defense when the game won't let you player switch. Or as you stated, the AI just abandons positioning. That isn't a 'get better' argument. You can't get better when the game is stripping you of options.

You can work on your individual defense. You can't work on or improve the defensive AI. At any one time, you're only controlling one man on the ice. If AI players are constantly overpursuing and taking themselves out of position, as they do in this year's game, all you can do is hope that the offense won't take advantage of it or that your goalie will bail you out.

The defensive AI this year is abysmal, worse than it's ever been. The "read and react" AI logic that EA has been trying to implement for the last three years doesn't work. They'd be better off with a much simpler, rules-based approach that could at least guarantee that AI players would stay in their positions. That would demand more from the user (since the AI would do less freelancing), but at least you'd know where your teammates were going to be, rather than having to pray that they don't completely abandon their position to chase after the puck carrier.

You could try playing around with strategies. That was something that took me a while to figure out.

I agree that the AI isn't great. But at some point people have to understand how to adjust to minimize the issies
  • I'll help you out sport.

To best minimize the a.i. d messing up, everyone has to play their position and set the strategies to collapsing and puck side attack.

Again, this helps minimize the problem, doesn't fix it.

No one has spent more time playing around with strategies than I have. There are no strategies, as far as I can tell, that keep the AI from overpursuing, leaving its position, etc. And no strategies make the AI aware of offensive trailers, so that over and over again you see people trying this exact same play:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5fGaDdnoyI

Guy skates down wing. Defensive center overpursues and chases him, even though defenseman has puck carrier under control. Trailer cuts to middle, puck carrier passes puck back to him, wrist shot.

This play only works because the center always chases, regardless of whether you're on the puck carrier or not, and abandons his defensive assignment in the process. And the RW doesn't take his place or look out for the trailer, either. Instead, he decides to skate below the hashmarks, even though the LD is in perfectly good position to handle the offensive winger. It's absolutely horrible, and it happens every game, multiple times a game. It basically turns 2-on-4, or even 2-on-5 rushes into great scoring opportunities.

#15 on Fred Shero's Rules of Hockey is that backcheckers must "pick up trailer. No trailer come in behind defense." The defensive AI violates this rule on literally every single rush. It's utterly egregious, and completely unnecessary. Just code the AI so that backchecking wingers play their positions and pick up trailers. Period.
  • This needs a MAJOR overhaul next year. Also happens when you get pinned to the boards, your AI player will go opposite to where you could kick it to him and instead goes behind the AI player where there is no way to get the puck to them. The CPU team however, always goes to the correct spot.

My AI players will tie a player up in front of the net at times, so that's decent, but they leave players open in the slot too many times for easy one timer goals. If I'm chasing someone into the corner, the AI should recognize this and look to cover an open player.

But yes.. human team AI player awareness needs a TON of work for NHL 18.
  • It's not just strategies that's the issues it's player tendencies and the fact that AI havr no basic awareness... Ea didn't even make them able to predict that the puck carrier is two steps away and they need to stop back skating and turn around to keep up with their check, they stop back skating after you pass them, hoping that you the massive boost you can get from checking works, which it always seems to work for the AI, you don't think they have a hit, then bam they go from 0-100 warp 6 feet and hit you because hitting has been over jacked.

Ea needs tendencies sliders, and the user needs access to this so we can change their tendencies to suite our own.

"Playing better D" doesn't solve the issue that the AI makes for a game that isn't fun. You can play great D, and the AI still makes ridiculous, immersion breaking choices. You might learn to compensate for these errors, but it still sucks the fun out of the game. The AI is a major issue for online play and THE major issue (along with the horrendous passing mechanics) for offline/single player modes. You saying essentially "git gud brah" just shows that you fundamentally do not understand why this is an issue for people, which shows a startling lack of critical thinking skills for an adult, or it shows you are a troll. Either way, knock it off slugger.

I guess I don't understand it because I don't have this issue now with the way I play. You have to be sure not to draw guys out of position. If you do, it messes with everyone's assignments.

See, my critical thinking skills helped me solve this problem. You should try it.

No you just regurgitated your talking points without showing an ounce of insight or understanding. Which is exactly what I expected from you Scamp. Let your parents know that you finally didn't let someone down, okay slugger?

You clearly lack reading skills. I offered my insights, but you clearly don't have the mental capacity to understand them.

Real mature bringing someone's parents into this. Keep being a tough guy behind your keyboard lol.

Your advice was to not bring people out of position, but that's exactly what the AI does. Was checking to see if the AI had actually improved from 2016 to 2017 before I buy it. Clearly it has not. Same old garbage, no defensive AI what so ever, your team mates don't even play the puck even though it's right there, and the infamous boardplay that someone else mentioned. No need to get open AI, I'll just kick this right to the player you're hiding behind...

Do they at least move now so you can get a clear run over the blue line? or do they still stack up in your way so you're forced to run into them or into the D standing up at the blue...
