I’ve often had the same thought when playing 6s (depending on the skill levels involved and connection) over the past couple of years. It almost feels like the ice surface is too small and you just don’t have enough room.
As I have said before the defense has become a bit too good and allows for insane ability to trap and cause the game to become a clustered mess. Wish we had the option to use Olympic sized rinks in the EASHL for 6s as it would open up the game and still defense can use player gap control to stop passes and push opponents wide from getting inside.
NHL 18 made me quit 6s. Over-aggressive defensive play is rewarded too much due to the lack of agility and acceleration while skating, and SPPs absolutely kill the flow of rushes most of the time due to being clunky.
Let people actually skate again, let me play the game rather than warping me in and out of animations constantly, and let’s make goalie pads solid. Ooo, maybe even nerf the wrap-arounds that have been untouched and OP since 07! A stretch goal would be to have well-times hits to actually connect rather than having an arm-shove animation play out with no contact made.
If all of those are met, maybe I’d consider playing this game online again. RIP LG Pro series. The golden-era of NHL...
"It almost feels like the ice surface is too small and you just don’t have enough room."
Agree 100%
The scale/size of players/ice/rink is no different from NHL 09-12 than NHL 18, yet back then there was plenty of open ice, you didn't feel like you ran out of space, etc. It was because the skating was extremely responsive so you could skate around, navigate a defense, open up ice, etc. Since TPS the ice/rink feels small, no space to operate, defense smothers you instantly in the offensive zone, nowhere to skate or go, etc.
Jesus Christ tps isn't perfect but it isn't that bad, it's not to blame for every problem. In fact I don't have hardly any issues with it when playing offline with real nhl players. There lots of little problems and broken mechanics in this game that have nothing to do with tps. The problem bunny is talking about is not tps it's ever since latest gen came out the game is literally like bumper cars. Every bit of contact is greatly exaggerated, almost any contact causes you to lose the puck. Plus this game rewards over aggressive play way more than it should. So everyone is always attacking. Plus the physics are kind of wonky. So good games of 6s can often be a bumper car, turnover fest like experience.
Skating is the #1 worst thing about this game. There’s always been clipping, there’s always been suspect goals, there’s always been nonsensical puck physics, but not being avle to skate makes playing through these things impossible.
9/10 6s goals either go literally through the goalie, or they’re scored in a 9 person scrum due to 6 simultaneous warping animations firing at once, and the lucky one that gets the puck tucks the rebound behind the stiff, tin-man human goalie we’ve been blessed with since the “next-gen”.
The skating is a joke. Nobody needs to make such a big wide turn to go the othe way. There is no quick cuts, no pivots, and the overall physics are a disaster

I think its a bad time to test this out. In the current game it would be an improvement for sure because everyone skate like a 8 year old on skis but it would be a disservice long term when you fix skating because if you fix skating and also make the rink larger, then there will be too much space and it will break the game again. Just like it was dumb to make spiderman goalies AND implement TPS at the same time.
Assuming of course, that they will ever 'fix' it... I am not very optimistic on that regard, because they keep defending it despite of all the criticism.

Good point. It would be fun to try though. Anyone know what the actual scale of the current rink is in comparison to reality? Is it to scale I mean?

And that's what I am worried about honestly for NHL 19. To see the same old problems in a new hockey game. I am very anxious to see what the game play will look like on the youtube videos. Crossing my fingers they've addressed some of the issues so many have been bringing up.

The NHL rink size is 200 feet by 85 feet, while the Olympic rink is 15 feet wider, at 200 feet by 100 feet. Also I have no clue about that other stuff. I just know that extra 15ft wider in a video game scaled would mean something like 5-7ish players wider which would mean entering a zone would be easier instead of 4 on the line trap like most people play. It would also create more teamwork I feel with more passing to open up spots and ya the defense could just do what they do now and put like 5 in front but with more ice the ability to spread out especially on a powerplay makes things deadly. That low one timer around the goal line would be much harder to stop because the forward could drift farther forcing the dmen to possibly leave the middle open.
It’s just a joke all around. Like I even jumped offline to play franchise and I can’t enjoy it. I’ve tried a bunch of different sliders I found online and it’s still just kinda meh...even with the sliders there seems to be a problem with puck pick ups and then dealing with the EA “I win mode” where the ai team will just grab everything and anything, make solid passes, even the one touch passes are super quick and crisp, but then if I get into the zone and try to cycle my team is just standing around like they’re waiting to get orders. It makes it difficult to enjoy the game honestly.
The same problems I had with the ai online is carried right over to offline. It doesn’t matter what strategy I set them to they don’t react any different. The only real difference you see is when you set their pressure to right point or collapsing, but they still stand around, there is no ai pressure, there is no quick reaction, offensively there is no moving around to get open, they kinda set up where the initial strategy says to go and then stand there...even with the issues that plagued this game in last gens years it didn’t feel this bad. I never felt like I was playing against the other team, my team and my player, it’s just really rough this year. And the most annoying part is switching players, whether it’s online or offline I am never able to switch to the player closest to the puck and it constantly costs me goals...I can sit there spamming to change player and it’ll keep switching between players that aren’t near the play, at which point I have to drag one of them out of their proper position to try to apply pressure to the play leaving one person open because none of the ai covers for the player I just moved and then end up in a chance or a goal against. They can literally leave this game the exact same next year and just change up the skating, puck pick up issues and the issue of being able to change to the correct player and I would be perfectly fine with that. The changes for EASHL and all these other modes can wait, new celebrations and adding back in winter classic mode like some people are suggesting can wait...gameplay needs to take priority for once.
Other than that I would love to get into BAP, but it’s boring, it’s been boring since it was first introduced...like why can’t they take a page out of FIFA’s book for BAP? Because that’s really the only enjoyable BAP that I’ve dealt with over the years..Give me goals to be able to unlock points towards certain attributes, give challenges that actually take time and make it feel rewarding to play instead of just having me grind out seasons playing with terrible ai where you end up having to 1 man team it and put up completely unrealistic stats

This x1000. I pretty much stopped playing 6's because it is now a clustered mess, add in lag, wonky pivots, canned animations. (ie loose puck pickups pulling your forward offside when hammering back on controller to stop on blue line), and other issues we all see. To me it is more frustrating than fun. I've been saying we need the Olympic sized rink for EASHL 6's for awhile now just never been on here to support it, but I'm totally on board and I think it would definitely help. I still enjoy and play EASHL 3's as the issues are less noticeable w/ less players but 6's to me now is more about hanging out with my buddies than actually having the fun I used to have.
Yeah, switching players is just bad. I've heard a lot of explanation why it is, how it is, but it wont help too much, if these issues cost you goals and games pretty much every time you play.

There’s no reason why it should be like this though. You play madden, or FIFA, or PES, or NBA, any sports game if you switch players it will switch to the person closest to the ball. NBA you can manually choose who you want to switch to and who you want to pass to, it would obviously be more difficult in NHL to do that because so many buttons do so many different things in this game compared to NBA, but just off of regular switching no other game seems to have issues like this including other sports games released under the EA name.
Id like to try out 6s on Olympic Ice, but I'm not so sold on the mode switching to it.
What makes the offensive zone feel so small to me is how the D to D pass is an automatic breakaway the other way. Any side to side puck movement has to come below the goal line. In real hockey, the Forwards would get burned if they jumped that passing lane every time, but the first step with the puck is too slow to take advantage and that L2-shuffle skating is unusable.
The 4 man trap at the blue line is supposed to make the ice feel small. Adding Online Team Practice, and letting us practice together against it would be the solution IMO.

I feel like the rink is probably close to scale but thats hard to say without scientific evidence lol. I feel like there is enough space to make plays and not too much space that you can do what you want and have too many lanes open at all time. But the skating is so wrong that it throws the formula out. If skaters skated like this in the NHL, it likely would feel like the rink was too small too. IE: tim horton little kids playing between periods cannot seem to get any "space" to do anything but they are in a large rink. The main difference here is we could see more lanes to pass while tim hortons kids cant pass. lol

Exactly. This never was an issue before. You shouldnt be able to pass d to d all the time but if its open you should be able to but the controls and reception / skating / animations are so bad that you just cant run that option anymore. That alone should have been a huge sign to the devs that their changes were ruining the game.

Yeah, I agree.
But people ask for the fix since the current gen, as far as I know. I asked for the fix several times as a "gamechanger" and it still appears to be broken. So I don't know They probably don't feel like it's important enough, to prioritize it over other things.
Offline - Boring. Flat out it’s boring. BAP has been the same stale boring garbage for the past 9 years. Make some changes that will actually hook people in, not the same copy and paste setup you’ve been doing since it’s been introduced. Franchise, ehhh, that’s it, nothing special, the fact that I have to go look up the best sliders to run is a little ridiculous, the game should be made correctly in the first place. Even FIFA has a better offline setup with just being able to bring your BAP into a regular franchise and play as the whole team and have him be apart of it, and I absolutely hate soccer and I play that garbage more than this. Like do something like that and have the challenges that will add attributes to our guy...do something, this same nonsense of being locked to one player and playing with a team full of atrocious ai makes BAP corny.

ummm not to argue... but D to D is a go to play I use lol I set my D up usually on the opposite sides (righty on left lefty on right) and get tons of one timers that way
