There are two pieces. Pass Assist and the Online Pass Assist Percentage.

Pass Assist itself has a default value by game style and offline you can move that slider to whatever you want. Online, depending on the game style of the mode you are playing, Pass Assist will have a default value based on that game style.

The Online Pass Assist Percentage allows players to override but only to move it down and make it more manual. They can’t ask for more assist than the default for game balance purposes. So if the game style you are playing on has Pass Assist at 33/100, then the Online Pass Assist Percentage even when at 100, is giving you 33/100. Setting it to 0 would give you 0/100 and setting it to 50 would give you the equivalent of 16.5/100.

As for some context on how Pass Assist works itself...

If you are on full manual passing with no pass assist, there is only one angle you can send a puck at 55 mph that would hit a current moving player on the tape in stride.

The game looks at how much power is on your pass at the time of release and looks at what each player’s path is in the future and determines which player you are attempting to pass to based on who you are closest to the perfect angle with. Pass Assist however doesn’t need you to be perfect and will make the angular correction based on who it thought you meant.

The lower the Pass Assist slider though, the smaller that tolerance is. Think of a setting allowing for example, 15 degeees of error to either side of that perfect line. If you are outside that tolerance for all players, you just get a full manual pass in the direction you were aiming. Power isn’t ever assisted so either way you get the power you were after. It is possible to pass to a wrong player if your error is such that you are closer to their perfect line.

So the best case scenario is still to pass as though you don’t have Pass Assist on, leading players relative to their speed and the pass power you are asking for and Assistance will make up that delta if you are off. On competitive game style though we try to have it in a sweet spot that players can snap passes around but can also send a puck off the boards without It being assisted straight to them. Players who still feel it’s too high for their preference can use the percentage to lower the impact it has.
  • If it was removed it would be impossible for most players to connect a pass

I don't believe that to be true at all. Pass Assist was added as of NHL 16 I believe. So how was it possible in previous iterations? From my understanding, we had always been given 100% pass assist. We just didn't have the ability to change it until the last few years.

I'm not looking for perfect passes every time, just consistency. I can make that same pass at 100%, 50%, and 0%, and see no difference in where the puck goes. Other times, it makes a world of difference, especially when making breakout passes from out of your own zone. I don't know, but passing just seems off to me and it really seems to be bothering me more in this game rather than in years past.

    Take for example NHL 14.

When you create your player and distribute your points, you could put points in the PASSING trait. The more points you put, the more assist you had.

Changing the pass assist setting for online modes was introduced in 17 I think. There wasn't an online slider prior to that.

So in essence, passing assist was always there depending on how many points you put into your player back in the day.

I think I have a pretty good understanding how the online pass assist percentage works as you explained it very well when answering my question on this topic in another thread.

The only part that I still struggle with is the "degree of error". You mention 15 degrees, but is there a set number we cannot go past when making a pass? For example, if I am set at 100% pass assist, do I only receive say 10 degrees of error vs if I am at 50% I receive 5 degrees of error? I think I understand the math portion of what you speak of, but what is the joystick error?

This is what I am not finding consistent. I feel as if I am getting the full manual pass no matter what percentage I am set at. Say that I am on a rush, the player I would like to pass to is at my 4 o'clock and my stick is showing 3 o'clock. I look at this as the correct positioning of my joystick as I want to lead my player and hit him in stride. Should that pass connect with 100% pass assist or do I not want to lead him in this situation? My experiences have shown the latter.

But what you are saying doesn't apply to VS/HUT play. Both of these modes still have a passing trait for the given players. Can we change the sliders for EASHL? I didn't know the Pass Assist slider works for that as well if so.

Remember that you shouldn't just be aiming at the player (unless they are standing still) but instead where they will be when the puck gets there. So if the player is currently at 45 degrees when you press to pass but you are passing at 40mph and by the time the puck travels the distance it needs to get to them, they will then have skated to 60 degrees relative to you, you would have needed to be pressing towards 60 degrees instead to lead them with the pass.

Pass assist allows error on that line. I actually don't know the exact amount off the top of my head right now as I am at home but I think it is somewhere between 20-30 degrees of error at it's default on Competitive gamestyle so about 10-15 degrees on either side of the perfect line or something like that.

And yes, as you lower the percentage, it is just a straight percentage so 50 percent would give you half of leniency that you get with 100.

Pass Assist and Attributes aren't related at all.

Pass Assist is a User mechanic to help with error on the left stick to decide who you intended to pass to, while attributes factor into pass ability after the pass is made.

Pass Assist never has error. It either knows who you want or goes to a manual pass.

Attributes however add error as they get weighed in along with the physical factors in the model. So a higher rated passer won't get as much error on their pass as a player with a higher rating but both players relative to themselves will have more error passing behind themselves than they will out in front of themselves.

The error gets added after the pass is asked for. So if you aim at a player with your left stick and get pass assist that will help you deliver a pass at 45 degrees and you have requested it to travel 40mph, it registers at that angle and could max out at that speed. Then if you are delivering on your backhand for example, it may be less powerful and less accurate and even more so the lower the attributes of the player.

Hope that makes enough sense as I jumped around a bit.

Well based on what you say, it seems mechanically at least, I am doing everything correctly. However the results have not been in my favor. I'll continue to try and tweak to see if it will make a difference, but it has been frustrating at times to hit my marks.

And I do want to add, I only tend to struggle making the passes in VS, EASHL passing has never seemed to be an issue for me. Maybe user hustle plays a factor in hitting a player in stride? I'm not quite sure, but it seems I over-lead players when in VS way more than Club.

I’m having problems when two guys are lined up almost perfectly and my pass goes to the guy I don’t want. That sounds like chance or I gotta learn geometry to pass in this game in the split second you get.

Could the players movement to make the pass change where the pass is going from where you wanted it to go? I’ve had to many passes just change the angle so slightly that it goes where I’m not pointing the left stick.

Hard to say why it works out different for you across those modes as the game style is the same for both.

What team pass percentage do you usually get on average in VS?

it shouldn’t, other than error added after for it being passed to an angle that is more difficult or if the pass animation needs to be a backhand vs a forehand for example. That can add some difference. But the angle you are picking is the destination and regardless of where the puck is located it will try and go towards that destination.

It should sample the angle of your left stick the moment you release the trigger to initiate the pass. It won’t sample your left stick up until the pass animation releases the puck like it used to. This was done so you can start using the left stick for what you want the next player to do right away.

Honestly, try a super low pass assist. Like 20%. I used to get so angry about the passing in this game, thinking that at 50-70% that it's low enough to not throw my passes to all of the players I didn't want. However after going to 20% my goodness what a difference. I used to have a few passes each game go to the wrong guy but now it's like once every 5 games. It's lovely.
