This is something I've been wanting for years now. The goalies should gradually learn during the game. Say, if he gives up 2 goals from the same spot short-side, he should shift over a bit. Or if they're beat by the backhand-forehand-backhand on a breakaway, take that away the next time. And add some randomness to it. It's a bit boring seeing the same goals over and over, and I'm guilty of it, too. I'll take the high percentage shot unless I feel like changing it up for whatever reason.

So, score 2 shots the same way, then you know the goalie is going to cheat in that direction and leave the other side wide open. That would be horribly exploited.
I think you took it too literally? He said goalie should shift over a bit, not to leave the other side wide open. And also if there would be some randomness added how G would react, it would be much better than how it is now.

You’re worried that the goalie will be exploited if you score two goals the same way? Really? The fact you can score on a move 100% is more worrying. Goaltending is an important position. Goalies don’t need to move always to close off an angle entirely. They simply can be more prepared to where the shots gonna go.

Currently goalies are nothing more than robots who can’t compute in certain situations and do basic goalie things such as kicking a rebound to the boards when the can clearly see it come.

So again, goalies can adapt too. They do many times a game. It ain’t just dman and forwards. I’m no goalie and never was when I played hockey, but It’s sad EA doesn’t give the goaltending position the love and recognition it should. Every play goalie? Hugging the position and going post to post is a nightmare.

Are you saying they removed changing lines/strategies from hybrid controls to force people to spend more money? I don't see how that's remotely true. I don't have numbers to back this up, but I don't know anyone that uses hybrid controls. I know there are some out there, like yourself, but to say it's a significant percentage of the playerbase does not have the ability or inclination to learn the skill stick seems a bit unrealistic.

You get hooking calls when you stick lift out of position. You take penalties for tripping when you poke from bad angles. That's not some form of ice tilt. You just need to learn how to defend better and play a more disciplined game.

I am saying that 100% the people at EA have a goal in mind to create a competitive imbalance in order to make money. Removing strategies and changes is one of many (which you chose to ignore the others) ways in which they do that.

There has been enough evidence shown on the boards to show that the poke check aspect of the game is extremely broken. With regards to the hooking calls, I was unaware there was something called the "hook" button. I was under the impression it was called the "lift stick" button. My mistake.

And how can you defend better when anyone who uses the stick control functions has the hustle buttons and hybrid doesn't. See? Competitive disadvantage.

Where is there proof here on these boards that poke check is extremely broken? It's probably the best it's ever been. You're punished for bad pokes. That's how it should be.

It makes no sense whatsoever to add some kind of balancing by the game. It's totally pointless to have it. That's been debated endlessly here so I'm not getting in to it. The only thing I'll say is that you will never get any better at this game so long as you believe the computer scripts your wins and your own skill isn't to blame.

For me it's a stick lift button because the majority of the time I'm lifting because I'm in a good position. Yeah, sometimes I get a hooking call because I'm attempting a lift from behind. That's my fault.

You choose to play on Hybrid. It's good EA has that option as there are some people that don't have full control over their hands so simpler controls mean they can still enjoy the game.

You can still be in good position and the game bails our the forward.

    https://gamerdvr.com/gamer/epicxowned/video/74415984

I make a good stick lift and the game decided I must look cool while I pick up a loose puck. They come down and score.

    https://gamerdvr.com/gamer/epicxowned/video/73207698

Forward is in a terrible position to protect puck. I go to stick lift and the game had an other mind to where my stick lift goes. He gets away with the puck.

You what happens every game that doesn’t get recorded? When a forward is skating along the boards and when I go to stick lift, he puts his stick in the boards as a bail out and I take a penalty.
  • I have played over a 1,000 games have finished all milestones. What they need to do to make this game better and more appealing is to remove the arcade mode type of plays. Deeking is fine but the ability to figure skate and not be knocked from the puck is crazy. The controller vibrates the puck handler skates through 5 checks and never is bumped. The reason average players drop is 1) matchmaking as many said D1 players shouldn’t be matched with D5 players or players rated in the 5-6k range should be matched with players in the top 100. 2) The figure skating and glitch goals. 3) The top tier players get the top cards and at given points during the season if you aren’t in that top tier you either buy packs if you have the funds or give up. The one thing that I do think was great was the ability to get so many good free cards my team is made up of 75% free (monthly reward and milestone reward players). But as some have mentioned here it makes for very similar teams playing.

I play the game because I like hockey, and I like to play vs someone other than the system.

100%. Been playing for 20 years even though today's my first post here(Been lurking on the NHL sub on reddit). Catering to the casuals IS a big reason why the game has gone down hill.

My god, yes. I was accused of being a terrible goalie in drop-in after giving up 2 wraps where my goalie just refused to move laterally. Too bad he wasn't there to see my shutout in the game after.

It's a delicate balancing act, I suppose. I can pretty consistently stick lift guys as a sniper, and I'm ok with how it works in general. Frustratingly. they still manage to pick the puck right back up sometimes. I tend to avoid poking unless I'm like 90% confident in it working out, though. On the boards I either just wait them out or ruthlessly abuse the board play. There's no way my 160 pounds guy should be pinning people the way he is, but as long as it works, I'll keep using it.

True. Also we want to play all modes online coop. Or let's get GM connected back. Like he said, let us do what we want.

I don’t think it’s a delicate balancing act. I think it’s just bad mechanics. There’s no doubt it is quite frustrating when you make a good defensive play just not get the puck. Sure, not every time I poke or stick I expect to the puck. But for instances like those clips, I have gotten the puck.

To get more players to pick up this game, keep on playing it and eventually become yearly buyers. They need to stop pushing everyone towards Ultimate Team. EA are aware of this, as can be seen in this article describing a conference call they did for investors:
    https://www.fool.com/investing/2018/11/05/investors-concern-electronic-arts-digital-revenue.aspx
«On the conference call, COO Blake Jorgensen explained that the company is focusing on steering players to live service content like Ultimate Team, but is being careful not to drive that too hard.»
As of now, we have VS being the only online mode that are not on servers, which is a huge incentive to choose HUT over VS.
There’s no longer a postgame lobby after drop in games in EASHL.
Meaning it’s now harder to play more than one game, together with players you click with.
Making it less probable for clubs to form or invites to be sent.
Also, drop-ins is the only mode that doesn’t look like NHL. I think customers buying a game, literally named NHL, expect to play in NHL uniforms in NHL arenas, or at least something reminding of that.
Are they pushing too hard? I would say so. All of these are taking away from the other modes, making HUT the only mode that has it all. On servers, in uniforms, in arenas with lots of ranked competitions and all the bells and whistles you could wish for....
... Except gameplay. The gameplay in HUT is horrendous. Ironically enough, the one mode they are trying to steer everyone towards, is the one that plays the worst. Making all their efforts to get you into HUT, risk turning you into an ex-customer.
I love hockey, also the video-game version of it. There’s nothing like finding open ice, passing it to moving teammates to get that high percentage shot:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bB-6KAuVysU
Even the dreaded «one-handed tuck», can be satisfying to pull off:

Unfortunately, moving the puck around is not the most viabale strategy in HUT. You’re better off shooting from blue:

    Going for short side:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIbFa4-enmA
(Yeah, bad D I know. But the amount of those shots that goes in are insane. Turning everyone into a gliding, puck protecting hog, trying to find that spot.)

They disable sprint at the most unfortunate times:

Your players goes into «no stick mode», totally unable to reach for the puck:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrLg5ovuEJw
    They whiff on slow passes:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMom2sUPpvQ
Or just cannot get a shot off:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r71vzAWudbw
Still, I’ve been playing it. Cause some times, not often, but on a few lucky occasions, all that goes away and your players will actually do what you are telling them to:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YndlVlO1DEM
So I’ve played the game. The fun and satisfaction of successfully setting up a play outweighed the frustration over clumsy players, cheap goals and inputs not registering. Until this year. They took away the one thing I love the most about playing hockey games: Passing. Of course, not passing as a whole, but your teammates positioning.
You can’t set up anything when your teammates stop their breakout sprint the moment you pass:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NLYA02nbxs

This is what they need to fix, to get players back or even create some new hardcore fans.
I’ve been a customer since 94, but now, with AI literally not even being on the ice, you are succeeding in driving me away. For new customers, without great memories of what this game used to be like, I would guess picking up this game is a one time mistake, for most.

This might be true, but I think it adds an aspect that teams need to prepare for. You see it all the time in the NHL. Most of the time it will get intercepted, but one slip up on defense and it could cost you.

If they want to be "sim", they need to up pass speed. I could be way off but I feel like if I hold the pass button for max speed from my own goal line, it will get to the opposing goal line about 3 times as slow as when you see a missed breakout pass in real life. It almost seems like an irl stretch pass speed is equivalent to a slap shot in NHL19.

Also, by speeding up passes, it opens up for more creativity and, in my mind, would incentivize puck movement a lot more than how it currently is.

How often do you employ a manual saucer pass for a breakout? Those seem to get decent speed and work great on breakout passes if you have good aim and timing

Well I see your point, but you have to think more within the game itself and not necessarily how it is in real life.
Like for example, board friction is set to 0. Players can easily squeak right by a defender while rubbing along the boards. Can't do that in real life.

In 3s this would be a nightmare as players can figure skate in ways not possible in real life. Also picking off passes while clearly being in the passing lane is harder than it should be and definitely not as reliable as in real life.

One-timers are extremely way too easy to pull off. Literally hold 2 buttons and wait for the puck to come to you.

So based on this, I am not so sure upping max passing speed is all that great of an idea.

Could be your perception is a little skewed. When you make a pass, especially long passes, the camera follows the puck so it could make it seem like its speed is lower.

Short passes has been a weak spot of this title for as long as I can remember. It would be really nice to have a reliable way of playing those short simple passes.
Personally, I haven't been missing higher top-speed on the passes, but when you say harder D to D's... hmmm...

On the other hand, it's a very good argument how upping the top-speed of passes risk turning the multi player modes into cherry picking festivals, besides it will encourage more blue line shots, instead of more zoneplay. So for me that tempting, fast D to D will have to take a backseat.

That pass is missing the defenders stick by a few inches, why can't he adjust for it? I mean, he is in perfect balance, two hands on the stick, open view to the play and totally uncovered. What if the game lowered reaction times when some of those parameters were met? I think it would help tremendously. Both on offence and defence.

A more urgent problem, is how your AI teammates actively avoid being open for passes.
In this clip I win the puck in my D-zone and LW starts off by the boards. When I bring it over to feed him the puck, he stops his forward movement and glides towards the centre on our own blueline.
This is happening often and is a clear sign to me, that I should carry not pass. My teamates are now in "not interested mode". I mess it up here and tries a pass for my centre. See that little stop in his skating?
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAxcsym2Sv4&list=UUlXOrct_CvBp4jj9bwj5NFQ&index=41
This is the stuff that needs to go. There's definitely more, but this is the most urgent one. Having a team that wants to play should be a given, not something you are pleasantly surprised by when happens.
