NHL 20 wishlist and suggestions

Replies

• Please add these Canucks jerseys at launch. https://50thcollection.canucks.com/ They look cool, especially the third jerseys.
• I have seen this game struggle and I have hopefully found a way now to tell someone in the NHL 20 production what I expect to ser in NHL 20. I’ve been playing franchise/GM for a few years, and have noticed a few things that end up keeping me away from this mode.

You need to try and have the players more involved. Draft day is bland, it should be an entire process that the player is excited for. Don’t make it a big list, and maybe add a few highlight reels of the top prospects and some stats. Something similar needs to be done for Free Agency.

Adding coaches that have personalities and a squad of their assistant coaches would be great. Right now, the players are essentially the coach, GM, the head of scouting, the head of sales dept, and more. GMs take part in all of these things, but aren’t the sole people doing it. Get some sort of menu for hiring firing people, have stats on em like ‘since hiring xyz, our sales have grown by 3%”

Simplify scouting. I hated the old menus where its this one scout that manages to perfectly enlapse every player in the draft, and the new thing is a big improvement. However, it should be simpler, as I just find myself autoscouting both pro and amateur. With fog of war now, scouting should also cooperate with it.

Drop the potentials, its a guessing game for GMs and coaches on who is the ‘next one’, and it really sucks when I know the top 10 in the draft and exactly how they will pan out. Obviously the system should stay in place, but keep it behind the scenes for a more real feeling of the game.

Overalls must be more spread out. For example, if Kane is a 93 or around there, and gets +100 pts this season, and a 4th liner like Kruger can repeat the same dekes and is just as fast, thats a problem. A 4th liner to a 1st liner should be around a 15 overall difference considering the impact of stat changes right now.

Trade deadline must be more involving. I would like to see an introduction of AI understanding when a trade offer is basically a playoff loan and the values of the trade refelcting that. Also, make some sort of highlight reel and stats menu of the best players that can be traded.

No trade and no movement clauses are a must. This is a major part of the trading world, and should be brought in.

Player personalities. Alongside the staff personalities, there should be something for players. I like where the draft day thing where scouts say “player is driven to win” etc, and it should be a bigger influence on the players and the numbers they produce.

———

Some things that I don’t nevessarily need but would like to see happen:

Face scans for players

Post-game interviews

Be a Pro revamp

Goalies being more difficult to score on

Have actual good plays be rewarded with a goal. In the sense that right now I just have my player drive behind the net and bang it in off the goalies behind.

I hope someone took the time to read this and actually put some of it into motion. Thanks!

The only few things I want, and I feel these are reasonable requests:

1. I would like for my player to not get locked in an animation. For example, when heading up-ice for a pass, my target player will skate within the pre-determined path that the game has set for him, regardless of my controller inputs. If the player is heading toward the attacking zone waiting to receive an in-flight pass, and I am jamming the L3 button backwards, the player will not begin to skate backwards until the animation is complete, drastically lowering the actual effect that my controller input has on the outcome of the game, which kind of defeats the purpose and fun of being good at a game. I would like to have my control inputs ALWAYS work on the player I’m purportedly controlling. Is that too much of an ask?

2. My player can be pinned to the boards from physically impossible locations by the CPU, no matter the size/speed attributes, and this happens too many times to count in any give game.

3. The gameplay sliders seem to have very little actual effect on gameplay. For instance, with “CPU teammate penalties” turned to 0, my CPU teammates routinely take 5 or more minors per game. I have plenty more similar examples with different sliders having seemingly no effect on gameplay, or at least no significant impact.

4. Skaters still feel like they’re in quicksand. I can have a fresh off the bench Dylan Larkin catch a tired Zdeno Chara flat-footed and somehow be caught a majority of the time. I believe this is because the game makes the CPU players respond not to where the puck or your player specifically are, but more often, to what you are inputting into your controller rather than the actual conditions and situation playing out on the ice. I would love to provide specific examples if anybody with any sway whatsoever actually was curious, but I highly doubt that this is the case.

5. Kind of expanding on the controls not having an effect thing, but while I am controlling a player who possesses the puck, there are certain times where no matter what buttons I press, the player will orient himself in the worst possible puck-protecting position. Instead of making sure he is in between the attacking player and the puck, he does the exact opposite, which obviously makes it quite easy for the CPU player to steal the puck from me. There is no situation where a real player would purposely put himself in the absolute least effective position to protect the puck, so why does it seem to happen frequently in this game?

Hi.
More what do you want is about sliders. Yes, you was do change sure. BUT There is some bad slider combination which ruin the game and too many users do not know about this error, the same as you. On the basic set is game unplayable too.
Try use GoldenSliders + tuner 1.02.
you will be more satisfied with this game, trust me.

EA should sell players in HUT, so that the prices don't escalate and also sell coins for player buying. This two things will reduce the illegal trade of coins...

- Franchise mode that you can play with friends online versus CPU not vs players.
- Be a pro mode that you can play with friends online.
- Celebration\Animation\Show before game like every team have in the NHL (celebration that we can manage\create when you create our team). For example, in the actual version you can selected that your players enter on the ice by a shark head (like San Jose), but we don't see this animation (players pass by the head) at the beginning of the game.
- Be able to select a goaler helmet style\pictures\etc for the goaler in our team in World of CHEL.
- All star game and outside games in Franchise\Season mode.
- Have players room cinematic sequence between period.
- More than one ice look\location when you play in World of CHEL with other players.
- No more black\white hoodies when you play a game with players in World of CHEL. Play with your away\home outfit.
- Be able to customize your coach in franchise mode.
- Fix the penalties ''issues'' (a poke move target by default the skates\legs and not the puck).
- Be able to select the types\class of your CPU players in your team.
- More fun\arcade options when you create your player (like put your skin green, your hair red, etc).
- Have more play by play name choice.
- Fix the lag\delay of when you press the button to do a pass but a player want to hit you, your player will keep the puck and you will be hit, even if your press the button to do the pass before the other player hit you. Sometime it can have one second between the time I press the button pass and the time that the player hit me, so it not normal that my player still have the puck. Pass need to be instantaneous.

I think a lot of rhings can be improved upon with nhl 20 coming.

Announcer/Broadcasting
The current announcing/broadcasting gets um.... Lame, repetitive, burnt out, and down right annoying. Switch it up with different announcers, broadcasting stations( espn & nbc), larger vocabularies, more custom team introductions, something in between intermissions( zamboni, mascots doing things they do when you go to the game you dont see on tv, cheerleaders),post game interviews that have impacts on the locker rooms and next game(s). A much better presentation of the general things the game seems to lack since leaving the sega nhl classics platform of game play that led to the xbox, playstation era that we still seem to be stuck in minus the graphics gettting better.

Franchise mode/be a gm..... Even create a team franchise
This is the one i play the most every year. This is the one i expect better every year from. And to be honest the last oh say 7 years have kinda been lame and a let down. One of the things ive wanted for many years in these modes and to include with be a pro mode. Hall of fame, when you decide to retire( you dont get to choose when that is now which needs to change as well). You get to see where you stack up amongst the greats of all time, (Gretzky, Orr, Howe, Roy?) And make it a special ceremony or cut scene out of it. Not just a page like the retired players page is now at the end of the season. Also add in Jersey retirements for players who the gm/ owners agree to have retired, and have a cut scene celebration before a game, add it to promotional nights during the season. Have them raise a banner too.

While on the subjects of raising banners, i think it would be cool if when you win the Stanley Cup, the following year before the first home game a Stanley Cup banner goes up as well for that year. So as you go through the years of winning Cups, the ceiling gets more decorated as you go. And if you win say 10 division titles in a row you get a 10 year division champ banner( like they've done in Colorado.) After you win the Stanley Cup have a cut scene of a city parade. Have a awatds ceremony, and show winners of the cup and awards for longer than 5 years( Lame in my opinion). Track how many times a player wins each award/ Stanley Cup in his stats. Keep all stats available throughout the life of his career. Same with coaches.

Make coaches more real and life like, the whole operations of the team more real, and life like. The individual scouts in NHL19 was a good step that way, but go further with it. Include medical staff, marketing agents, team representatives, sponsor's,etc...

Arena's:
Be able to get rid of that 50 year old arena, and build a new one if the city can handle the new venue. Or when you upgrade your arena, make it visibly noticeable. (Like the new big screen the Avalanche added a few years back & many teams have done as well) . when you upgrade the club seats( should be able to upgrade lower bowl ,upper bowl , suites as well too.) Show what you upgrade with. Or what changed. When you build a new arena, be able better fully customize it. More choices of the looks of the place. Besides the what 11 or so pre determined Arena's we have now in NHL 19.

Skills management Be a pro/ franchise Be a gm modes:
Be able to run your players through tasks that work on their skills, ( be a pro, lift weights or shoot pucks, skate drills. That you actually do. Kinda like knockout kings was back in the day. So you can grow your player depending on how well you perform. Or keep that aging players skills maintainable to keep playing into his 40's).

Scouts/ head coaches:
Be able to turn retired greats from your team into scouts/ head coaches for your current team. And say after your be a pro retires a team offers to make him head coach? Or a gm? (Sakic in Colorado ring any bells?).

Be a pro/ create a player:
This area i think has needed more, much more for many years now. Besides a couple of small things added over the years this area has really became stagnet, repetitive, and straight down WEAK! From the lack of equipment choices,to the way you pick what your player looks like, ridiculous goal celebrations,(99% are really bad and dumb) all the way to how your player becomes a NHL hall of famer. How does your player become a hockey player? Street hockey as a kid? Or a pampered prodigy his whole life? Why cant you start at say 15-16 years old and play as a high school varsity player, then choose how they go about making their dreams come true? Go to the juniors?, go to College?, go straight for the pro's?. Work your way up through the farm teams..? Goalie equipment needs a face lift, the masks is my biggest one. You should be able to customize the masks. Upload a picture and make it your mask. Have more variety of pad styles/ customized pads.

Create a team/ create a jersey:
Ok beside everything else ive talked about here so far. The create a team needs more logos! The letters for logos is whack! C'mon man give us something more, better!

All in all, i believe the game should be as real as it gets. Thats what i expect every year the new one comes out and for the last 10 years or so I've seen some things come but a whole lot more not. It hasnt progressed as i though it would looking back to NHL 96' ( my first game of my own in the series) to where it is now. Just some things i can think of right now I've really wanted to see in the game over the years. So we will see what comes next???? Hopefully something good.

In franchise mode, bring back the all star game(weekend) if your players make it, you should get to control them.

4. Better balancing on play- there is no way to defend other than poke check. ensue countless penalties.
5. Better programming for one timers. As a defensive player, it seems any time I use that left stick to try a one timer, he always goods after the nearest player. No shot, ensuing interference call. I just wanna have a one timer option from time to time.

I do absolutly agree with shiftyjustin.

4. Ya there is lol. Body positioning alone is effective, unless you're caught flat footed. Hitting, stick lift, dss. Perhaps you guys should spend some more time in practice mode.
5. Hold Lt, up on rs, aim with left stick. Not complicated, very effective. Trick is timing it. You can't just arbitrarily hold it up ad nauseum, you gotta do it with better situational awareness. Ie, don't hold up on rs if the other guy is right close.. That said, they used to have it where they disabled hitting around the net to fix it. It would be a welcome change if they brought it back.
• Top 10 Hopes for NHL 20

1) Goalie Learning - This applies mostly to online play (especially EASHL), where the CPU goalie should realize that X player / team are attempting the same shot over and over. The goalie should anticipate these shots better since little to no other shot is being attempted, which will also encourage teams to be more creative and varied in their attack.

2) Check Bumps from Behind - for the love of all that's pure and true, please fix this. There is a big difference between shoving/bumping someone from behind while they are at a standstill, while they are slowly coasting, and while they are skating at speed. Currently, it is an abused defensive tactic to bump someone from behind while they are skating fast. This causes the player to stumble and slow down, which defies logic and physics. If someone is skating fast, and you shove them from behind, you are PROPELLING them more forward. You should actually be helping them more than hurting them. Now, if someone is at a standstill or skating slow, then it makes sense that a shove from behind can be effective--depending on player type, boosts, etc.

3) Continue to improve poke checking - I think a lot of improvements were made, as you can no longer spam poke checks from behind without risk. But more improvements are needed. Most of which will require better physics. Your stick is not a lightsaber. If you're using full stick control and holding your stick into a lane, and a player skates into your stick, this should not be a trip. The skate, shinguard, etc., will PUSH your stick out of the way. This needs to be implemented. Also, the aiming of a regular poke check needs to be manual. Wherever you are aiming your R-Stick should be where the poke is attempted, with slight variations in accuracy and speed (via RNG) that correlate with player attributes. That way a player with a stick checking skill of 70 versus a player of 90 can still generally execute the same poke checks if they time and manually aim them properly, but the player with a 90 rating has a higher % of that poke always being as expected. Having it implemented like this will allow you to poke check the puck along the boards to spear it/wedge it back into the zone with less, or zero, fear of getting a tripping penalty. This is a basic hockey play that is far too dangerous due to the aiming issues with this game.

4) Game desperately needs better collision - sticks going through skates, legs, and pucks going through skates, legs, the goalie's pads, etc. needs to stop by implementing proper collision physics. Positioning needs to matter more, and interrupting a shot follow-thru should impact the power and accuracy of a shot. As a player, you should be concerned about taking open shots, getting open to receive a pass for an open shot, etc. Currently, so much clipping goes on that players are often rewarded for a shot that they didn't deserve, with the literal shot animation going through sticks and legs as if they weren't there.

5) Ability to rejoin EASHL game - if you unfortunately disconnect from a game, there should be an option to rejoin it-- much like so many other games. How this has not been implemented yet is beyond me. Please make this happen!

6) Contextual Animations - there should be contextual animations when controlling the puck near the blue line and near the goal crease. For example, if you have possession of the puck inside the zone, skating near or along the blue line should not cause your player to pull the puck out of the zone (unless it is clear you're intentionally trying to do this by manually skating out of the zone). If you are turning near the blue line or skating along the blue line, there should be specific stick handling animations that maintain the puck in the zone, even if your skates are outside the zone. And, in regards to the goal crease, you should not be collecting the puck then aggressively pulling/whipping it into your goalie that can often times cause a goal. Better animations are needed here too, such as gently pulling the puck into the goalie's pads so he can cover it or toe dragging it around the goalie instead of into him!

7) Fix Passes that pull or stop a player - passing needs a major overhaul. For example, often times when a player passes to you, while you are skating diagonally one direction, as the pass is sent your way, the game will cause your player to jerk the opposite direction--or completely stop. Why is this even happening? The game needs to stop taking control of your skating. Passing needs to be, overall, more manual. Also, side note: maybe add in the ability to reach / lunge for a puck that is too far ahead of you, even if it's just to tip it into the zone to avoid an icing call.

8) Make More Things Manual - deflections should not be automatic. There should be timing involved. For Xbox, I think a mechanic of holding L to face the shot would be required, and as the puck approaches you, you push the L-Stick up or down to control a high or low tip, and simultaneously push the R-Stick to execute the deflection. The player type and boost you choose would greatly increase the odds of a successful deflection, along with the positioning of your player to the shot, and of course the timing of your deflection attempt. Other things that should be manual -- a) checking (no more suction/warp checking), b) squeezing against the boards to keep the puck in the zone c) gloving down / catching a puck d) trying to bat down a puck with your stick. Also, side note, the game needs to remove warping. If there's a pass for a one-timer and you press shoot, or if there's a rebound and you press shoot, the game shouldn't WARP you into the puck. You should be rewarded for proper timing, and your teammates should be rewarded for proper passes. No more warping, and this should apply to deflections too. If you try to manually deflect a shot, your player shouldn't warp into position to tip it.

9) EASHL Practice Mode - I think the best way to implement this is via the Dressing Room. Once you enter the Dressing Room, you can go into the Practice Mode. If you're a Captain or Alternate, you can dictate any practice scenarios (PK, PP scenarios, etc.), otherwise it is just a free skate. As more and more people join the Dressing Room, they can enter the same free skate. The first guy who enters gets to dump the bucket of pucks on the ice! Once you have all the people you want to join the Practice, you can begin a club search. That way you can continue to practice while the search is ongoing. Once you find an opponent, it does not pull you out of practice mode. Everyone can see the club name and the opposing squad members and player types (just how it currently is) and each player has the option to Ready Up and then Hide the overlay (so they can continue practicing for the next 30 seconds). The person who INITIATED the search has the option to cancel the matchup and search for another club. That way if you keep matching up with a team you have already played multiple times and you'd rather play a different club, you can move onto a new search without interrupting the practice. Also, it would be nice to be able to block a club (at least for 24 hrs) so if you don't want to play a club for whatever reason, the game will stop trying to match you up with them for that time period.

10) Saving Strategies - especially for EASHL, there should be an option to save coaching and faceoff strategies for your club, so you don't have to manually adjust them each game (obviously you should still be able to change them on the fly in order to adapt to your opponent or the situation)

• HUT Online:

Please add a “SPEED PLAY OPTION” for those of us who just want to play. (Baseballs 3 inning games are great)

Games should only take 10 mins tops.

3 min periods, 2 15 sec pauses, no presentations, no replays, no 30 sec intermissions. Nothing more irritating when people don’t press the A button. It drags the game out for nothing. People can play the normal mode if they want that stuff.

Allow goalie change during game.

HUT Offline:

Please add more options for vs cpu. There is so much to do in Madden with many options.

Lastly, please fix line changes. It’s so clunky. We should be able to smoothly switch between lines on the fly and before face offs.

I have much more but I wanted to keep this short.

Agree with all your points. A few comments: in the practice mode I'd like to have the option to play with and against my teammates in a proper 6s/3s match, just like we could when the mode was still in the game.

When searching for games, you should have the option to specify the size of the team you want to search for; just give us 5 checkboxes to tick for 2/3/4/5/6 players. You could also ignore specific teams by going into the clubs recent games and choosing who you want.

- Faceoffs: I'd love to have custom faceoffs for club: in the club menus you could choose the default formation for each location and situation. In addition you'd be able to create custom faceoff formations, including the locations of the players and being able to swap them around, e.g. LW where the RD is, and so on. I wonder how hard it'd be to switch them on the fly, but it could work in the pause menu at least.

It'd also be great if you were able to change your faceoff taker on the fly. There are (rare) times when I have a poor enough connection to a N. American team that I won't be able to take them consistently, so it would be very helpful if my American RW could take them.

Some human goalie quality of life improvements:

- Allow us to tell the CPU teammates to shoot, like skaters can.

- Let us backskate back into our net instead of turning out back to the play, so we can actually attempt to save shots should we or someone else turn the puck over.

- Consider changing the pass button to something other than the butterfly button so that we don't accidentally pass the puck after covering it. There are soooo many options here. I know my screwy R2 too is partly to blame for this issue, but it need not be one.

- If you can get this to work, let us play as the extra skater after going to the bench.

And something I've mentioned before:

"Speaking of things we used to have, I'd love to have R1/RB back as the desperation save button, and then use RS instead of LS for the saves. You could then give the goalie options to modify the save with LS.

For example:

LS left/right + RS down = seal off the respective post with the spread eagle.

LS left/right + RS up = diving poke with the stick to that side.

LS up/middle/down + RS left/right = dive high/middle/along the ice, making it much more likely for you to save it if guessed correctly, etc."

• Suggestion: Let us select the servers we want to connect to.

I'm tired of playing with 125 average ping on eastern servers when i'm westcoast, it's not a good experience.
• Please add the feature where we can add underage CHL players to teams! I like to have a realistic franchise mode and I want to add the newly drafted players to their new teams but I’m unable to do that. Either make it to where I can player move them to the team or edit the player and just make there pro team the team that drafted them. It’s just a little thing that would make your game so much better
• I highly doubt with the game being released in October that my wishlist items will be addressed, but I find it necessary to submit my input on improvements. It would be great if EA would take what we as consumers of their product say seriously, and add some of the main points from this forum to an update or to NHL 21. I have been an avid player of EA Sports games for as long as I can remember, specifically for the franchise modes, so most of my wishlist pertains to the Be-a-GM and the creation zones.

Creating realistic prospects before or during the GM mode would be great. Personally I spend some of my time before starting my GM mode creating players and assigning them to CHL and European teams to draft. It would be nice to continue to add prospects in the later years of Be-a-GM to keep the game from becoming stale. Especially to have a variance of prospects to chose during draft day. I wouldn’t even be opposed to a cap of how many prospects I can create during the Be-a-GM. Adding player sharing like what is in MLB The Show has would also be a great upgrade. The Player Vault in that game has thousands of user created players that can be downloaded and added to your own roster. Maybe even include updated draft classes to be downloaded and customized that you can use during your Be-a-GM mode.

Player/Coach chemistry and personalities would also be a great addition and improvement for the game. Specifically things like a veteran looking for a shot at the cup in his later years, signing that player, and his impact on the development of young players. Include chemistry with call ups and trades. This would make the game more realistic and enjoyable for players like myself. Add in motivators for a player to sign with a certain team, for example if it is his hometown team, playing with an experienced veteran, money, big market, etc. Also have players be able to not just play in the AHL or CHL to develop. This happens frequently in the NHL where a younger European player can go to his home country to play or a veteran decides to leave and return to his home country to play. Include things like player maturity where it will determine if a player takes a bad penalty late in the game, whether or not playing on a line with players from the same country will effect development, does he look to shoot or pass first, etc. Even add in off the ice personalities and their effects on the team. Not every trade, draft pick, and free agent signing in the NHL pans out to it’s full potential. Some players dislike the coach, systems, playing time, other players on the team, not living up to the hype, unable to play in a big market, etc. Some players also overachieve, prefer a team’s location, like a certain coach, take hometown discounts to stay on a good team, and other factors like that. There are constant stories of how difficult it is to play in some of the larger market cities such as Toronto, Montreal, New York, and Boston which could impact player growth and development. This can also impact the Be-a-GM gameplay, make the game more realistic, and increase the strategy and difficulty for the players that want more of a challenge.

Next I would like to see an improvement to the Be-a-GM trading, specifically in season and on draft day. There are so many previous posts that have touched on this, and I tend to agree with what other people have been saying. I would like to see more of a negotiation between teams in a trade, especially if one team is trying to dump players for cap space, rebuild, or are getting ready for a playoff push. This would also be great for the AI trades that CPU controlled teams make. For example: I use the Boston Bruins and I am 4 points ahead of Toronto for playoffs headed into the trade deadline in my Be-a-GM, the CPU controlled Toronto makes a few trades of prospects and picks for depth and role players to attempt to catch up in the standings. In the same season Vancouver is completely out of playoff contention, and decides to begin their rebuild process early by clearing cap space for upcoming free agents and acquiring draft picks to target a few highly touted prospects. Back and forth negotiations would make trading in season and before the draft more enjoyable and could add strategy to the mode. If you’re unwilling to compromise it would effect you GM reputation, and cause teams to be less likely to offer trades to you and vice versa.

The ability to relocate and/or Create-a-Team desperately needs improvements and upgrades, and it has been brought up in these forums for several years. I for one, would like to be able to use current cities infrastructure if I was to relocate a team. For example: I chose to move the Florida Panthers to Houston, I would like to be able to use the Toyota Center as my home arena and have it look as realistic as possible. This isn’t too far of a stretch with some of the cities to relocate to, as their arenas are used in other EA Sports games. Going forward it would also be great for a created team or relocated team to have more realistic looking jerseys, as well as the option for a third jersey and the ability to create new jerseys down the line while keeping the originals. Add more realistic team names, logos, and mascots to Create-a-Team. I personally like the game to appear as realistic as possible, and for my created team to look like it actually belongs in the game.

Scheduling Winter Classic games in Be-a-GM mode and customizing the venue. It would be amazing to be able to schedule a Winter Classic game during Be-a-GM and be able to use one of the cities other sports stadiums as a location. For example: I use the New York Rangers in my Be-a-GM and want to schedule a Winter Classic game with the New Jersey Devils at either MetLife Stadium or Yankee Stadium. This also goes back to the point I brought up with relocation arenas, where EA Sports already has these stadiums used in other games like Madden which could make this an easier addition to the NHL series in the future. Being able to customize your own Winter Classic jerseys using logos from the past, creating a new concept jersey with logos and/or lettering from other teams in your market, and/or upgrading and customizing a jersey the team currently has would be great.

Anyway that is about all I have to offer for a wishlist for NHL 20 and/or NHL 21. I doubt that the creators and producers of the game will ever see or read this, but I felt that a consumer and player of the NHL series I needed to voice my opinion on how EA Sports can improve their product. I may have said the exact same thing as many other people in this forum, but that should show EA what to focus on for the future. I have been a loyal customer of EA Sports for over a decade, and it would be nice to finally have the wishlists in these forums become reality. All of us have spent our hard earned money on these games for years, and I don’t feel like myself or the rest of you are asking for too much here. Maybe not NHL 20, but NHL 21 could have some of these “wishes” answered and be worth the $60 price tag.
