The lack of any work being done to handle online toxicity is disheartening.
New presentation sounds good.
New commentary to turn off - so maybe that volume level will stay above zero longer than a week this year.
Still no custom music? Lame.
The whole “new team celebrations” sound like they could be a little cheesey. Gonna need to see some video of that.
No lobbies? No tools to handle trolls? No accountability to finish a game?
EA has a real opportunity to engage the community with their game, but the lack of effort in providing in-game tools to do so is very discouraging.
Especially when we read about a new battle royal mode that nobody asked for. It’s like; is THIS what EA brought a bunch of new developers over for?
If the work that was done on this ridiculous battle royal mode resulted in the ability to join EASHL games mid-game, then I would say the development effort is worth it.
But hell - if there was significant resources put in to that without a global net-effort.... sigh.
The “target demographic” comment is hilarious. So, in what universe should the target demo of a hockey game be shifted AWAY from hockey fans?
Hockey is hockey. We all want tools to play better hockey; practice mode in EASHL, lobbies to entice cooperative play, custom music to improve immersion and changes to things that have been the EXACT SAME for years: Board Play, faceoffs.
I’m excited for all of the changes but when other aspects of the game remain dormant for years and you get sucked in to a board battle from 5 feet out, your eyes will roll and those “changes” will seem tainted.
I am curious to know if custom cameras have made a return? Any camera changes?
Definitely excited about the RPM and goalie improvements. The new presentation stuff sounds cool. I'd love custom music, but in the end I'd get bored of my own playlist and would end up streaming music from my PC like I always do anyway.
I know everyone is highly underwhelmed about 20. I can see why since there's not a lot of new, flashy stuff coming, but if the improvements to RPM are good, that's all 100% worth it for me.
I used to LOVE EASHL. I played it every day. You used to be able to find plenty of games online (either club or drop-ins). Then they started dividing the community with 3v3, but even then, I had fun, even if it was frustrating trying to find 5v5 games. Then they REALLY ruined the mode by making it Arcade Pond Hockey with Clown Suits, no broadcasting, no presentation, etc. It's SOOOOOOOOOO boring now. Absolutely so NHL atmosphere, no feel of exciting hockey. It's just blahhhhhh, and now it's almost impossible to find games online in your region unless you're willing to wait for hours.
All of this wouldn't be quite as bad if Be a Pro was fun. It used to be. Now it's just a grind and they haven't done anything to the mode for years. Apparently, they totally ignored the offline modes again in "Arcade Pond Hockey 20". Is it really the best strategy to try to target kids that may or may not even like hockey? Shouldn't a game with "NHL" in the title be geared toward actual hockey fans?
I can't believe how negative you guys are being, these changes are actually good on paper.
Yes, I agree that the game should be further along, but it isn't thanks to the disastrous NHL 15 release.
Instead of being negative, let's try an exercise, is there anything you do like about the reveal (as underwhelmed as you may be)? If so, what is it?
I was also underwhelmed but I did find the trade finder and the addition of coaches to Franchise mode to be something worth getting excited over.
Allllright, I'll bite...
I agree, the addition of coaches to Franchise mode is intriguing... but what's the over/under that it's a half-baked effort? That it's going to take 2 or 3 years to work out the bugs for it? That it may be all we see for offline for some time? That even if it is a solid contribution, the game-play is going to be so buggy and render the mode unplayable like it has so many times in the past? Or that the sim engine is so out-of-wack there's no point in a 'realistic' sim mode when it's not 'realistic'?
I understand negativity begets negativity and that in and of itself is draining, but with this title it's just been too disappointing for too long.
No thanx for me this years ,i ll keep my 90 bucks ,nhl 19 was my worst buy this years
the game was simply boring ,the nhl series is so far behind vs other sport title ...
go play fifa or nba 2k you ll see ...
i spend more time playing with sliders setting then the actual game
i was praying for that miracle update ..but no!!!
hockey is my sports...but the last time i had fun in the nhl series was on the ps3 (legacy edition)w/nhlview
here what wrong with your game:
the skating and movement is wrong ...player should move freely on the ice ..not that muddy effect
players feel all the same... playmaker sniper 2wf ...etc
the game are repetitive it s just dumb and boring...
the A.I well it s geting better but still ..
your roster update is awful...player build are the same for so many player c mon Ea really!
i did my own roster update ...so many attribute for player are just there ..anyone who watch
a bit of hockey would make better roster then yours ...faceoff rating ,hitting, block shot ..
nhl.com keep track of those...it s pretty easy to apply who s the best in each category
again no roster sharing ...
stickhandling is non existent or just gimmicky...
hockey is a exciting sports ,but no in the ps4 days...
instead of trying to get those micro transaction from those online players
you should get back to the basic ...and make a good and FUN hockey game..
Maybe you aren't their target demographic anymore lol
I think this post pretty much sums up my feelings about NHL20. I could easily vent about how underwhelming the “new” features are (how in the world is clown gear still in this game and why are we still playing outdoors!?) but why bother....the NHL series just isn’t for me anymore.
EA says no to offline modes because game changers are strictly online players so of course World of Chel and HUT gets updates you either play HUT and WOC and sink more money or don't buy the game at all because EA don't care they cater to a certain group
Short and sweet you nailed it that exactly what they did , the beta for 19 was good but they changed it changed to please a few
Wait, so more World of CHEL and this pond hockey nonsense? Clown costumes? I absolutely can't believe what you have done to this franchise, it is a joke. I was certain before I wasn't buying 20, but now I'm really certain.

No thanks.
Let me ask you this. Would you add any new worthwhile modes/activities knowing that next year new consoles are coming out? All that 1s n 3s thing is an online tournament mode for it.
I personally hope they have been working on next-gen since I'm sure the dev kits have been out and they had a rough idea of the power being presented from MS/Sony. If Frostbite were to come it would be with next-gen since they would have had to have built the modes to work on it. Hopefully they been focusing on that during the down times of the game. GM Connected would make a better selling point for next-gen also.
If you remember how NHL 15 next-gen went then you would hope they prepared themselves ahead of time, but only time will tell how that is gonna go and if they were smart and planned it out well.
Please explain the benefits you expect from the 'Frostbite engine'
To be fair I would say EA does need to use a new engine for NHL series as the Ignite engine is probably tapped out on potential. While Frostbite is pretty much more of a beauty than performance thing it probably will come next-gen I feel. In a perfect world the sports titles would have an engine more designed for their needs and all would be great.
Sports titles just need a crisp performance engine over anything else. Rocket League is only on Unreal 3 and it's got amazing performance. Sadly we know the sports titles won't get the freedom that Star Wars is getting for their upcoming game.
It's just crazy how no one has been able to make a game engine to compete with Unreal Engine though

I feel like it's more about resource allocation though. I'm sure creating an engine from scratch takes a tremendous amount of time, money, and manpower. The when it's finally created, tested, and up to par people need to be trained to use it. Which is more time and money. It's probably easier to pay for Unreal 3/4.
Hm, they claim the clown suit circuit 'resonated' with the fans, so EA's adding even more gear / clown suits? Really, in what alternate reality? half the players can't stand drop-ins now due to the outdoor rinks and clown suits; many of those who have to settle for 'droppings' absolutely loathe it, but they just have use it. Some are indifferent, and I guess some people even like it. But to claim it resonated - is a bit of a stretch - unless they mean people had strong opinions about clown gear (which is true enough ).
It was a game style nobody asked for to begin with, and they just keep pushing it. in an *NHL* title no less. They should maybe consider the fact that dropins are forced to use clown gear. I bet if people could choose which ones to use, they'd go pro gear almost every time. or better yet, make that casual pond hockey a separate game, and see how well it sells?
100% agree
Just a bit of poking fun here, but have you seen every jersey in the euro leagues? Lol
.. Literally clown gear (or NASCAR on ice).

It looks like EA is getting focused on toxicity: https://massivelyop.com/2019/06/14/ea-held-a-summit-about-toxicity-and-healthy-video-game-communities-at-e3/. Love seeing that.
