AI is Still Awful

Replies

  • I just want the AI playing on my team to react and play the same way the AI on the opposite team does. That's it. On All-Stars, the opposite AI has better puck possession, better stick lifting, better defensive position, better backcheck, more aggressive towards the puck holder etc....

I am not one to go out and trash on developer. The reason why every feels the game is titled its because the AI cheats. It's been that way throughout this generation. It's frustrating when you point this facts out and you are told, you need to git gud or play better defense. The game doesn't not provide you with the tool you need to do so. That being said, this year is less worst than previous year when it comes to pass interception but the same skating from behind and stick lifting the poke away from you is insane. I caught many defenseman on their back foot with a super fast player (Paul Byron) and they still managed to caught up to me, stick lift and took the puck away from me. That's is the frustration of playing NHL 20 at all-stars level. It's almost feel like a choir and random series of luck than actually skills to win the game.

    What will Abdelkader do?

    Will he:
A.) Shoot it with the open lane in front of him.
B.) Hold it and simply get laid out by Granlund who is right in front of him.
C.) Pass it to Filppula who is situated in the corner.
D.) Pass it to Helm who is placed nearby the front of the net but is covered by both Benning and Haas.

    Take your guess!

I'll give you a hint: the difficulty is Superstar, so it's DEFINITELY not A.

    LOL

Without any choices I would have said he'd make a perfect no-look-through-the-legs pass to a defensemen behind him, but seeing as that's not a choice.... hmmm C or D.

Ahhhh, I'll go with D and add Helm gets off a one timer for a goal because there were only seconds remaining in the period.

What mode are you playing? I've actually found superstar to play more fair overall, instead of all star. I found all star to be the worse of the 2 difficulty levels when it comes to ai cheating.

This is based on HUT squad battles though. YMMV

    Try franchise all-stars.

D is correct, but the pass gets intercepted LOL
  • Please devs just make it so you cant skate backward(L2) with the puck thats not even a real thing in hockey and if it is your puck control should be like 5/100. Also please remove the one hand tuck its wrecking the whole aspect of setting up plays. This game as it sits is like shooting on a shooter tutor in open hockey. Drive the net, shoot, repeat

That's nothing. Just had the most stupid non goal ever. Absolutely bad programming. Puck stops literally just over the goal line. Like I could see white between the line and the puck. A dozen connected poke checks couldn't dislodge it or even budge it a millimeter.

I'm starting to get frustrated with this inconsistent mess of a game again lol. How do I go from dominating SB teams on superstar for well over 100 games, to struggling against 77 teams, and it literally becomes impossible to do anything lol.

Anyone who tries telling me I'm not as good as I think I am, I'm entirely ignoring your baseless words.

There's absolutely no consistency in anything with this game, and I almost feel like everything positive I've seen and said the last 3 weeks, was simply a run of the game working well. Not sure what changes day to day, but something is.
  • AI is horrid...I think this pic sums it up for me. This was a 5v5 with AI goalies on both sides. I'm on the losing side...I had 100% on defense and 90% on team. We owned them...their two goals were jokes. One was a horse crap shot from the blue line entering the zone, and their second one was a damned clear out of their zone during one of our power plays that hit the back wall and rebounded into the goalies pads and into the net. We peppered that goalie with some great shots...in fact two of the end of period replays were their AI's goalie's great saves. AI is not equal in this game.

LOL, that's a good one. But sadly, these things happen in game programming.

I mean look, 2K20 is not a perfect game. There are problems and bugs and such. I'm not blind. But at it's core, it's basketball. Everything from the presentation to the actual gameplay is just trying its best to be authentic to the game and the culture that surrounds the game of hoops, whether it's street ball or professional NBA. Every mode has it's own flavour and that's what, IMO, makes it great. Yeah, people will complain about the casino games 2K added this year, and I gotta say, it's a little obnoxious, but I don't really mind it's in there. Why? Because I can play basketball in my NBA game! As long as I can do that, I'm happy.

NHL is so... bland and contrived. Every mode you play feels the same. The same brand of non-hockey permeates this series and it has for a long time. The amount of control I have over my actions are also very limited compared to a game like NBA 2K. In Chel, almost everything about playing is automated; Auto-pokes, auto-passing, auto-aiming, auto-blocks, auto-saves. You mean I gotta sit there in net, challenge the shooter and be in perfect position but HOPE I don't get sniped because the game decided I just HAD to be sniped because I have no control over my actions? While in NBA 2K20 if I take the ball, dribble, do a cross-over, fake a shot, spin and take a fade away J, not only do I have to perform every SINGLE action I just described using a button or input combination, but I also have to time my shot release to actually be able to score... What's this? A videogame taking actual skill? Not only skill, but knowledge because I have to know when to perform those actions to be successful? Is this real life???

And I agree about skillzoning! Heck, if they only ever fixed player switching, the dreaded "skillzoning" (IE: actual Defense) wouldn't be such a nightmare for "top players" anymore. But we're never gonna have anything like that. Because EA doesn't listen to actual people like us. We don't bring them enough sales with our talk of "hockey 101" and "knowledge over cheese". We don't bring them any twitch viewers with our Dot or Stick pack openings. :p
You know we listen to everything that is said by our community. Can we make everyone happy? Of course not, but to say we don't listen, nothing is further from the truth.

I think the majority of people understand you can't make everyone happy. In my option, the problem lies with who you are making happy, or perceived to be making happy. I'm referring to the streamers or the minority of players who welcome any and all exploits. I feel there are a lot of people who want a real sim type game, an actual hockey game. With the LT abuse and the puck protection abuse, real or close to real hockey will never be attainable.

A lot of us loved the 19 beta and the early release of the game, but then it was changed back. It rewards selfish play and punishes those who try to mimic real hockey. I know you said it was the same tuning but with a little tweaks, if that's the case it still completely changed the game.

I feel you cater to the few, because they have influence, and basically tell everyone else to fugg off.

You can say all you want but I feel your actions don't line up.

I totally understand that not everyone can be happy. It is obvious and a fact of life.

Problem is, every forward wants to score, every D man wants to shut everyone down and every goalie wants to save every shot possible. So the question is, how do you balance all this?

  • I love when i'm playing D in drop-in, and an AI forward passes it back to me instead of to a streaking winger. Then the guy yells at me for calling for it when I didn't press anything.
  • Passing back on a breakaway... only in EA's NHL, and maybe the Colorado Avalanche.

I haven't played NHL since 18, and IMO AI has been horribly bad since PS4/XB1 came out (starting with the unfinished NHL 15), NHL Legacy (16?) on Xbox 360 has sensible AI in comparison.

Happen in offline all too often. I had posted a video about it as well. Playing on position lock as (D), my AI forward had a clear path up the ice and get the puck out of my zone. What does he do? Passes it back to my player even though I didn't call for it. Bounces off my stick and to the other team. EA logic I guess.

Here's just one example I have where the AI went rogue. I called for the puck 3 times.

Problem is, every forward wants to score, every D man wants to shut everyone down and every goalie wants to save every shot possible. So the question is, how do you balance all this?

I think you have to give those players the tools to score, defend and save shots. Right now the only tools that are effective, some would say overpowered, are the tools given to offensive players. 1 player should not be able to skate through a whole team on the regular. There is no need to pass as it is now. LT into the zone, skate in circles, score, repeat. @NHLDev, this is how your "competitive sim" plays.

If they were to actually solve the LT and puck protection I think there would be balance. That would at least allow the defence a chance, which would also benefit the goalies as they wouldn't face so many shots or more importantly scoring chances.

And what's wrong with having to work for a goal? It's not easy to score, it shouldn't be easy to score. You shouldn't be able to do the exact same thing over and over. You should have to work for it.

  • The game is way too easy. It doesn't play like real hockey. I agree with above, there's no need to pass or dump the puck in.
