Hey everyone,
There's been some talk of the soundtrack for NHL recently. I've merged a couple threads here so we can continue the discussion. What kinds of music do you want? Should it represent the sport or is it more up to personal preference? Should there even be a soundtrack or just a custom music feature? Let's hear your thoughts on all things soundtrack related.

Replies

  • Who made the sound track for this game? We dont want to listen to bad vibes by k flay. The only good song is brand new numb. Can i get a raise of hands of whos hockey team blasts bad vibes or me tv in the locker room?
  • I like Sibling Rivalry by PUP but overall I'm not a big fan of the sound track. Ended up muting it so I hear my mates more clearly outside of games. Having your own music on PS3 was cool but oh well.
    Casual goalie gameplay: https://t.co/tQnYxAsyKy
  • The Rival Sons song is the only song I can listen to....the rest is just absolutely terrible "music". I have had it turned off from day 2.

The soundtrack has been awful for years. It just feels like they get the cheapest songs that they can get.
I know people have talked about downloading their own soundtrack/playlist which apparently was in previous games. That would be cool. Also, the songs for the stadium effects are horrible as well.

Downolading your own would be perfect. Better for consumers and less work for already lazy devs seems like a good idea

So I made a post about the horrible sound track this year and everyone seemed to agree it sucked. I know music is subjective but i thought maybe we could brainstorm a playlist that was tolerable. No one wants to hear I LOSE LOSE LOSE MY MIND 200 times. So heres my playlist that i made. I set some rules. I tried to keep it clean and no explicitly. I tried to use every genre evenly. I used songs from previous artists in previous NHL games. Here are some songs

    •Only one king-Tomme profitt
    •Voices-Motionless in white
    •Gloves are comin off-7 Kingz
    •Be legendary-Pop evil
    •Hell yea-Rev theory
    • Kernkraft 400-Zombienation (I only want this for bostons goal song)
•Stick up-Grandson (I know its a violent song but we are playing hockey)
    •Loser-Beck
    •Up the smoke-Stunna 4 vegas with offset
    •City of angels-24k golden
    •Hey brother- Avicii
    •Intro-NF
    •The scotts-Travis scott
    •Howlin for you-Black keys
    •See me fall y2k remix-Ro Ransom
    •Legends are made-Sam tinnesz
    •Unstoppable-The score
Again i know music is subjective to every one but i feel like this is a tolerable playlist for everyone

Comment songs you think should be added I want to extend this list so its longer and comment what should be removed.

Any edits to this post is either me removing or adding songs

I can tell you right now that the sound track gives me bad vibes, and that my feet will certainly be going “boom boom boom” to get the heck away from it. This soundtrack is like a backyard filled with stray cats, just sad.

We went from Avenged Sevenfold, FoB before they were awful, BFV, Paramore, Gob, Bowling For Soup, and many many more great bands to soundcloud wannabe pop singers and emo garbage garage bands.

Isn't music subjective though? I haven't liked probably 90% of the soundtracks over the last 20+ years because it's just not my style of music. I think the last song I really liked was from Jimmy Eat World on NHL 03. I'm sure we try to select songs that help add to the overall immersion, but with so many people with varying tastes in music, I doubt it'll ever make everyone happy. Turning the in-game music off is one of the first things I do as I like to stream my own from my PC.

It definitely is, but I just don’t consider indie-pop and indie-screamo really the “hockey vibe” lol. Due to how subjective it is and how it’s a impossible to satisfy everyone, it’s further proof that we need the custom music feature back in the game. Back to the original point though, I’d rather direct that money towards literally anything else but terrible indie music. Haven’t heard any of these songs featured in NHL 20 on the radio.

Yea it is completely subjective making it impossible to satisfy eveyone but i think im speaking for the majority. Like one of these replies said hockey kind of has its own music vibe. Im not sure if you play hockey but if you do and if your team plays music what do they listen to?

Show me a team listening to “bad vibes” before the game and I’ll show you a very bad hockey team lol.

Haha it was kind of a joke. Soundcloud is notorious for awful music from aspiring artists.
  • Can you still turn off the songs you don't like? I remember this was a feature. I don't know anymore because I like many have not liked a single song from recent years. That High Hope song was catchy enough last year but aside from that...

Can't cator to everyone, however you could throw in some more varying types of music and allow people to deselect the songs they dislike (if this isn't a feature anymore)

There should be at least 2-3 classic rock songs. And some more relevant hip hop songs.

I agree that the indie-pop or whatever it is you want to call it just don't scream hockey.

I haven't heard them either, but I also don't listen to music on regular radio. I know once in a while I'll hear a song from the soundtrack during a stoppage in a real NHL game though. It's always kinda cool when that happens. Even if I'm not a fan of the song, it's nice there's that connection between the game and real hockey. Custom music would be awesome. I used to create a few different playlists when we had this feature, but now I'd probably just rather have a Spotify integration.

I also like the idea of spending that part of the budget on something other than licensed music, but when we had just the orchestration music in 15 and 16, it was met with a lot of negativity. So, some music is probably better than none. Besides, there are also people that like the soundtrack. You have to always keep in mind these forums attract a fraction of the playerbase and there are really only a few dozen that regularly post here. It's not really the best example of the music not being widely appreciated.

I think music for the "hockey vibe" has changed over the years though. What truly is that vibe? When you see bands playing events like the All-Star Game or NHL Awards show, they are pretty radio-friendly bands, but do they represent the sport? Has there ever really been a defined style of music for hockey? For me, it's just whatever sorta pumps me up and gets me excited, but that could be anything from punk rock to indie hip hop. For others though, it's the bands you mentioned or something completely different.
  • NHL 20 sounds like a car commercial. Some variety would be nice.
