NHL 21 Fixes

I wanted to start a thread to highlight bugs and inadequacies in NHL 20 that need to be fixed for NHL 21. Anyone else is free to add ideas below and I may edit them in.

1. Auto-pass. There needs to be a slider to turn this ability off. Too many times have I iced a puck on a breakaway or tossed the puck to the opponent because I swapped to a player as he coincidently picked up a loose puck. Pre loaded one timers need to stay, but the option to turn off pre loaded passes should become a new feature.

2. Manage strategies/lines in intermissions. I understand only allowing 1 pause to change these things during gameplay but in between periods we have a 30 second break that should be able to he used to change up your tactics to better challenge your opponent. This would be more realistic.

3. Buggyness around the net. Wether you are setting up a play behind your opponents net or picking up a play to start a breakout in your own zone, players always seem to get stuck up or loose the puck on the net. If you try to skate around the net to stop a cross crease pass the player always gets stuck on the post and it's an instant unguarded shot/goal. Also pucks get stuck between the goalies skate and the post and it is impossible to pick up if you are the defending team.

4. Passing. I understand there is an element of realism that is put into pass accuracy but it seems like 1/2 of my cross seam passes for the empty net either lock onto my third trailing player or the opponent which wrecks the grade A chance. Passing should never lock onto the opponent's player and there is something up with missing a pass that should be easy, either throwing away chances or icing pucks that your player chose not to pick up.

5. Picking up the puck. I don't know why it is so hard to pick up the puck half the time. So often I do circles around the puck or fly over it until my opponent picks it up and scores. This is also a big problem when you lay someone out on the ice and you know every time that their player will get up and skate away with the puck before you can pick it up.

6. Defensive moves. This is a big problem with the game. The game seems too offensively driven as body checks roll off like hot butter or you are just stuck there skating into your opponent and they won't lose the puck. Stick lifts go straight through their stick and a repetition will cause a penalty. Poke checks momentarily free the puck only for the opponent to grab it again. Tick tick tick tick and they still have it and score. I agree with the penalty margin to deter the old tactic of spamming the poke check but now the button is essentially useless, and that is a problem when checks and stick lifts are too. To build on top of this, the LB crouch block stick on the ice is useless. Half the time the puck travels through the stick, but somehow it is still a physical item that can trip people.

7. Goalie inadequacy. Either your goalie is a superstar and will fly across the crease to block cross seams with his stick or he will let in wrist shots from the blue line and knock the puck in on saves he has already made. The rebound control from goalies in this game is atrocious. I have seen goalies push across to make a save and fall over. I have seen goalies skate out to pick up a loose puck and knock it in their own net. I have seen goalies randomly leave the net when an opponent enters the zone (all AI goalies). Goalies need to be improved to improve the realism of this game.

9. 2nd defender leaving the zone. Idk how many times there has been a turnover in center ice or the opponent is approaching my blue line and my 2nd defender decides to skate past him and leave the zone. It looks like maybe it is a program bug that was designed to an agressive defensive approach to check the puck carrier with your uncontrolled d-man but he doesn't even come close just skates away and leaves me on a 2 or 3 on 1. This is a reoccuring error somewhere in the code (defensive strategy set to normal).

10. D-man covering post or winger set up at opponents post leaves position when you get into perfect postion. I witness time and time again when your opponent goes behind your net and swings around my d-man leaves his position to leave the open winger to tap in the easy goal. In the other end when I get to perfect passing position my winger will leave the post and skate away, ruining the chance. AI offensive and defensive awareness needs to be improved.

11. Player just stops. Sometimes when I am chasing for an open puck or trying to block a cross seam pass and I am skating full force somewhere, my skater just stops. It either gives the opponent the open puck or, worse, prevents me from blocking their pass for the tap in goal.

I think the game looks beautiful and the concept and moves are great but these are a couple of critical gameplay errors that have wrecked NHL 20 for me, so I'd really love to see an NHL 21 that I can buy that has these problems addressed. There are more I'm sure I'm forgetting right now but these are the big ones that need to get focused on to improve gameplay and deter players from abusing these problems.

  • GAMEPLAY-
fix goalie y/triangle to cover- As playing as a human goaltender, there will be scrambles in front of the net where it can easily be cover and prevent a goal

fix laying down and crouching- I noticed that you can hold laying down and crouching where im trying to block passes/shots and my player will get right up allowing that pass/shot to get through

easier to stop a pass as a player (passing lanes)- I cant count how many times when playing on defense, the puck will go through my legs or right under my stick when i'm covering the back door pass, and the pass will get through and it will be a easy one timer

enter practice mode by yourself and during play-when people are playing your club- you should be able to start a practice by yourself while your club is in a game.

I would also like to see adding AI defenseman in open practice

Better EASHL AI- The D AI will just get burned making them useless, they were better in 20

get rid of "forcefield" when the right stick is held to right or left- should make it easier to hit players holding the puck to the left or right, there will be this "forcefield" that just nudges you to the side of the puck carrier

    shortside goals should be harder

sense of urgency-down late in the game or with an empty net, the AI should have a sense of urgency where they have to pressure the puck instead of backing up into their own zone allowing an empty net goal

arena updates- the philadelphia flyers got a new jumbotron and is not added; also The New York Islanders should play at the Nassau Coliseum
hut customization- JUST COPY AND PASTE EASHL customization INTO HUT
goal songs-had it in 17, what happened??
EASHL Fninals at rink (best of 3)-Playoffs would be cool at your own club's rink with your fans and rally towels, and i would like to see a best of 3 with 1 team before advancing to the next round

it is only small list of bugs. it is unbelievable how EA company is building reputation thanks low end betatest management right?! who will fix so many bugs if with nhl21 we can wait for twice?!

And most of these things arent new bugs either. Like the ai leaving the back door open. I think this is done on purpose to appease the chel bruh crowd that doesnt know how to properly set up or cycle.
  • I thought of a couple more things I missed. One of which would be offsides. I swear, so many times my AI just skate up the ice and go offside and won't come back. Not only do they get caught up on other players and can't skate back but will deliberately stay offside so you can't enter the zone. I once skated around for two minutes while my ai was chilling offside only for me to lose the puck and get scored on. I can't even record these anymore because I have too many videos of NHL glitches. Also, if you happen to be a defender, good luck trying to enter the o-zone. Automatic offside.

Dynamic Difficulty Adjustment. Yes, the technical term for ice-tilt. Admins say it doesn't exist, the whole community says otherwise. Why do hail Mary passes through 3 defenders and wrist shots from the blue line work but my players won't pick up the puck and fan/miss every pass and shot, and their goaltender just turned into Jennings trophy winning Martin Brodeur and fly across the crease to make stretch stick saves 5x a game but mine can't stop low percentage wrist shots from the blue line and gifts perfect rebounds to open wingers at the post which my AI has chosen to leave alone? Something is up with the game when there is a large CR difference, all puck luck goes to one side.
  • super-defensive-target hybridization.
    Madden fan since 93.
  • My few ideas.
    1. Fix line changes after icing. Most of the time it displays the wrong lines for both sides.
    2. After a fight, have the linesman escort the fighters to the box (or off the ice if less then 5 min in period)
    3. In GM or BeAPro, suspensions for accumulating game misconducts. For every ejection, increase the suspension. (ie 1,2,4, 7, 11 etc)
    4. Commentary in GM. If I sim the first 2 periods, then play the third. I get a PP, its the teams 3rd, the commentary talks about my first PP of the game, then goes and says "they already scored earlier ". Make it consistent.
    5. For created teams, have an option to create a mask(s) as well.

The NHL isn't going to allow suspensions.
