Stop lying to yourselves, cross crease is trash

Prev13456766
The cross crease has always been a problem in the nhl series but in a year where they advertised that they had fixed it, its the worst its ever been. I get that there are way to defend it but even with that, almost half the goals scored will probably be some weird cross crease that somehow passes right through your defensemen. I hate the fact that you need to completely control your player in the slot just to block one stupid play instead of playing as the primary defender. The AI should be AT LEAST semi-competent in stopping the cross crease, but right now they don't do anything. The fix shouldn't be that you should drop everything your doing and defend the cross crease. I hate the fact that if you don't do this, in online games you will probably have about 60%+ of the goals scored against you be cross crease. This is just stupid. If you want to primarily defend the cross crease, this should almost eliminate the play... not turn it into a 30% chance play. Not to mention for those not at a higher skill level, the game just becomes a straight cross crease shootout. THIS IS GARBAGE. I PAID FOR YOU TO FIX YOUR GAME. THEY NEED TO FIX IT. STOP GIVING THEM EXCUSES.

  • I don't get why a perfectly positioned defender in the passing lane doesn't stop it. That makes zero sense.

I know but there are players saying just being in the lane and facing the player isn't enough.. yet the pass can go right through with 0 effort.

Those players rely on it and don't want their easy goals fixed. That's all.

I think we just want defenders doing more than just standing in the passing lane.

A pass doesn't require zero effort either. You need to work yourself in to a position to make a pass and then aim said pass, decide whether to sauce or charge up the pass for a hard pass - and then make that pass.

You're saying defenders should be able to just move their player in to the lane and intercept that pass with literally no other responsibility to take any other action.

Also, those of us who think it's nice that defenders have to do more are not just saying that to keep the 'easy goals' coming - a lot of us (myself included) typically play defence exclusively so in essence, we're advocating for making the positions we play more difficult and thus - more realistic.

Plus - we don't need those so-called 'easy goals' when we understand the passing mechanic well and can easily pull an opponent out of their defensive stance:

This is my issue.. if you aren’t defending it well then it should have a high success rate. It’s a hard shot for goalies to stop. That’s not the issue

The issue is defensive awareness in the slot (or really just across the board)

I don’t know what position you’re taking here since it’s kind of all over the place but that’s a bad example of a cross crease goal. Player needs to be facing puck carrier, although even then he won’t intercept that pass unless he’s flush against the attacker + has an extremely high awareness rating. That’s the issue

You should also 100% be able to intercept the pass by just standing in the passing lane (in a good position, leaning towards odd man) and facing the puck. There is no way to manually pick up pucks in this game so I don’t know what you’re suggesting. Besides a poke there is nothing a dman CAN do besides stand there and hope they intercept
  • I don’t know what position you’re taking here since it’s kind of all over the place

    huh?

Clearly I'm advocating that pass interceptions require more than just 'sitting in the passing lane'.

I'm all for more active defenders. It opens the game up more and exposes players who are bad at defending.

yes but the example you showed isnt really what were talking about. Im more talking about when someone just puck rags in the ozone just to get a cheese cross crease that is almost always there unless you park yourself right in front or when the player just flys in down the boards, sends it halfway across the ice, and it goes right past the defender lol. Your example is a well played 3 on one, i dont think anyone has a problem with that sort of goal. Also, i agree one times are hard to stop for goalies, but when you fling it from way across the ice, there is a lot of time to react to it and most goalies should have a pretty decent chance at stopping it. It should not be going in at the rate it currently is.

What mode are you playing? I’ve found the interception “issue” to be magnified in modes where you have AI players affecting your ability to correctly make a play. In EASHL, I’m having absolutely no issues intercepting passes.

The example provided was to show there's no reliance on "easy goals" by forcing passes through - showing it's not a crutch that I'm defending in order to maintain my ability to score.
  • I think the people who have a gripe with one timers and cross crease success / lack of interceptions are talking about 1v1 modes. I know I am, I played some eashl yesterday and I honestly loved it, if you cover your man and get in lanes, use pokes and dss, you can give the offense a very tough time.

Right now I have 0 gripe with eashl, hitting seems great.. and there is a risk/reward factor if you miss/connect on the hit, pokes are accurate and positioning really matters.

I am specifically hating forced cross crease passes in 1v1 modes.

Naw, you guys just want the easy goals to stay easy.

There's a reason 21 meta is cross crease city. It's not because nobody plays defence.

See how silly you and I both look in saying those things?

Balance is the goal - it's not about one particular perspective of how the game should be played versus another - it's about finding a balance on both sides of the puck.

In my opinion - defenders need to be responsible for more than just sitting in a passing lane.

One idea I had was to make vision control a pass interceptor when timed properly.

So a quick tap of LT - if pressed at the right time - intercepts the puck.

A full press of LT would activate vision control.

    Is that a realistic possibility?

That was some stanky D, guy doesnt even know how to turn around. But notice how he anticipates the cross crease?

    Poorly, yes

Right there with you, man. The 1v1 modes definitely feel this change a lot more than the player lock modes. I’d be all for upping interceptions for the 1v1 guys but idk if that’s possible without turning the player lock modes into a snorefest again.

He anticipates it but failed to position himself very well imo. If he LT’ed and put his back to the receiver and backed up slightly quickly then stopped his inputs for a split-second, he would’ve picked the pass off.

100% he could've played it better but my point is in regards to the comment

This gif includes good passing but dont kid yourself. The passing didnt put this guy in a tizzy, he's just flat out bad at D. But even though he could have tucked it in or even fed the trailer, Kid goes to the OP cross crease.

If not prevent cross creases to happen goes under the subject defense, what else would it be about...?

And say if only one people know how to defend it, that must mean there is a way, to defend it. Question is how..?

To start with, never use hustle in your own zone, L2 is sooo deadly importen too. It's the key, to adjust to the puck carriers move.. And it can defenetly be tricky, but once you get it, you get it.(and honestly, how many of you would say you use L2 alot, in your defense?)

Cross creases is so much hockey - cause it means - somewere on the ice - one team has made a mistake - whereupon the other team takes advantage of that. Isn't that what it's all about?...

I usally know exactly - which point I made a mistake, and if my opponent's see that and score on me - well played, sir!
