Let's Talk: What I like and Dislike about NHL 21 - in GIFs

  • The more you glide before a shot the more accurate it will be, but considering how everyone love to build speed when they attack, I dont really see that happen.

    Yea exactly.

There's a lot of players pushing left stick to 100% all the time while hustling.

This degrades the quality and accuracy of the shot on the whole.

It's always best to glide, if you have the time and space, before taking a shot.

Yeah I would say 95% of the goals we do are based on the speed we have more then it's a accurate shot.

Either 1timers, or short side snipe in 100% speed..

Why so many circle around in the zone is beacuse they dont want to loose the speed. It's not often I see people that play around in the O-zone with control over every pass and move. But the game is not really build that way.

    * Especially shots from defenders, I like to adjust my body abit with L2 just before I fire away.
  • A.I. finding open space LIKE

I'm really enjoying the A.I. through the neutral zone - and by the sounds of it - so is everyone. A lot of of the cross-crease opportunities originate from a smooth neutral zone flow, which I believe is facilitated moreso in NHL 21 than in NHL 20 due to the fact that the A.I. actively pursues open passing lanes:

    A.I. letting passes through LIKE

In previous years, it didn't appear the logic was consistent for when an A.I. teammate would purposely allow a pass through him in order to get to another open player.

In NHL '21, this is more consistent and I was able to capture an instance where this finally played out the way I'm sure it was intended:

A.I. - covering open players at the front of the net DISLIKE

Here's an example of how I would like the A.I. to handle open players:
    3drETlv.gif

As you can see - he properly disrupts the play by preventing a shot from getting off.

However, this is not consistent. More often than not, the A.I. will become quite passive and/or seemingly confused:

    fE3LfdU.gif

A.I. defense off of a centre ice draw DISLIKE

It appears the A.I. defenders - after losing a centre ice draw - seem to not be sure what they should be doing. While they are standing still and/or moving to a spot with literally nothing to defend, the opponent gets to just walk right through:
    byngS0R.gif

I'm just not sure exactly what the defender is doing here:

DSS not interacting with Puck after contacting player geography first - STILL NOT SURE HOW I FEEL

Although I believe this is working as intended, there are times - such as in the example below - where users would rather take the tripping penalty to disrupt the cross-crease than simply to have the stick be non-interactive:
    jBggXI6.gif

Also of note in the above gif: Why is the CPU defender literally watching the puck cross in front without any action?

Puck possession for defending team not consistent on Chip pucks - DISLIKE

In the following example, I chip the puck around the defender, but he correctly gets in to position to retrive the puck before me.. but the puck just bounces off his stick right back to me:
    2fAjenW.gif

Now, it could be that his poke check animation wasn't allowing him to obtain possession on this loose puck. If that's the case, I wouldn't mind being able to blend from a poke to possession

Using DSS and Body positioning - LOVE

Here, I'm able to use DSS and body positioning to get someone off of the puck without throwing a body check. When you throw a body check, you lose some of your ability to retrieve a loose puck - so this shows you that it is possible to just use positioning to get the puck back:
    T0NERZJ.gif

Does the A.I. use DSS? - if so - LOVE. If not - plz make it happen

Captured this clip where the A.I. interrupts a breakout with what appears to be DSS:

I dont like it.. One reason as you already mentioned and the other, people is much more aggressive with the stick, cause it's more likely to be like that or even better, you poke away the puck.. Think it encourage people to spam.

    * but as always, great effort with this 'thing' You provide us with.. Gonna look closer at it later... 😊

Game was sweet today.. Goals really happen when I had good shots.. So fun to just be able to try your luck.

Nice slapper from Connor and good puck movement on the 2nd. Nice deflection!

  • Slap passes were great last night. I really tried to add them to my offense and snagged a couple of clips:

That last one.. Oboy.. Pretty satisfing to undreass a defense that way..

The first one, that ranger #43 should have turn in to backskate to cover up that area.. It's often a logic reason why goals happen.

But good play. Might try to slap pass abit 2night..😊✌️

No one can do it like you do but will see what happen.. 😏

Another thing I started to do is to use the board more to pass around the puck, to find good angels. It feels much better then previous. I like to play between my D's with a bank of the board behind the net.

Some people continue to hustle after me and the puck even though they never gonna catch me, unless they fall back and try from another angel. But it's like fall back dosent exist out there.

  • Its no slap pass but it will do.. Mcdave turn away from 2 guys and find a nice spot...

I tryed slap pass, there good, got one at the post so far.. As always when I try to bring something new to my game, I overdo it, mess up my ordinarie style.. But now I have it under control.. When to use it and when not.. Abit from the side of the point, slap pass feels like the best option.. Like one of your goal kid.

    Well done sir!

When you chip the puck off the wall and the opposing player doesn't get it, how consistent do you see that?

I’d have to say not too often.

when I do see it - I’m almost certain it’s always after they’ve missed a poke check

  • Two birds in one glide-save... That one felt gooood.

@EA_Blueberry Captured another instance where the defender fails to grab the loose puck on the chip:

  • This would defenetly been a tripping in 20.

I dont know, maybe not so bad after all, to have it like this.

I was afraid of spamming, but as I also mention, your 'DSS-work' with the stick is a good marker to see in how much trouble your opponent is in... That you can take advantage of.

It seems they've removed the penalty on the frames where your player is pulling the stick back from a poke check.

Definitely a huge improvement. That was my biggest gripe about the poke check last year.
