No helmet option in creation mode

Can we please have the option of the created player not wearing a helmet? I love the retro players, but the fact that Orr and Bobby Hull aren’t in the game and trying to create them only to find that they have to be wearing a helmet is very frustrating.

  • I agree. I can't for the life of me understand why we can't have this option. Same with vintage goalie masks. They are in the game, but we cannot use them for created players. WHY?
  • I couldn't agree more! I've posted a comment for several years now re: the no helmet option being MIA along with vintage goalie masks not being available within the Create a Player section.

Why do we gamers never receive a response from the EA Moderator re: this matter? I'm not happy when I'm ignored as a customer.

Also, why aren't these other vintage options available as well? Jofa round helmet like Mario, Jagr (not even in the game as a player! - OY!), Theo Fleury and others wore?

Also, what about these other vintage options? Jofa and Cooper gloves. Brown leather gloves/gear for classic goalie and player items (besides selecting a brown color within the color wheel).

Vintage hockey stick brands such as: Cooper, Victoriaville, Christian Brothers, Northland, Easton (used to be there), and Louisville TPS.

Finally, how about vintage hockey skates that had all metal blades and tower as one unit? EA Sports claims "it's in the game." These things are not.

I challenge someone from EA to actually answer these questions within this section of the Forum.
  • While we’re on the subject, it’s incredibly ironic that Jacques Plante, the face mask innovator, is depicted in the game without a mask. It would be great if one of his iconic masks was available in the game. Sawchuk’s too. And while we’re at it, why is Sawchuk not depicted with equipment of his vintage. Come on devs, how about some answers?
  • I guess it depends on the mode you are playing. In eashl, you have all of those because the game is in a fictional league with fictional players but if you are playing franchise or be a pro, the nhl does not allow them to be used so they are not available. People on here preach over and over realism and simulation so it makes sense for that to be the case.

Your argument doesn't work because it doesn't explain why we can't create a player and add them to one of the Alumni teams and have them not wear a helmet or be able to assign an old school goalie mask to them.

The Alumni teams clearly have players with no helmets or old time goalie masks yet we can't create a player like this.

I say this is an oversight by EA and not something they did on purpose. If it is on purpose I'd like to hear the reasoning.

Maybe nitpicking but yes it does make sense because the rules state that you can have a guy not wear a helmet before a certain time in the CBA. So the guys that are created that don't wear helmets would fit into that loophole in the NHL rules. I'm just guessing as to why though, I don't know which is why I asked what you are making the league for.

Can you set a birthday for the player that dates far enough back and have it work? I honestly have never created a player in the NHL series before so I really don't know.

Back on NHL 19 it was actually possible to create players without helmets due to a glitch. That glitch was sadly "fixed" for NHL 20. So I guess EA are aware of this.

I'm pretty sure due to ridiculous regulations the no helmet option will never be in the game. However I cannot understand why we can't use the vintage goalie masks. We could back on old gen, so why not now?

It's simple. The Alumni teams are made up of players from a bygone era (many before the CBA and other rules re: helmets). Plastic helmets were first worn in the 60's, so the majority of players didn't wear helmets before then (except for a few who wore leather helmets).

As DaveLeafs1 ironic comment pointed out, Jacques Plante was the first to wear a goalie face mask (in 1959).

After Plante, several other goalies began wearing similar goalie face masks. Goalie helmets with cages didn't come into play until the early 70's (thanks to Soviet goaltender Tretiak who wore one in 1972 in the Summit Series tournament).

If the EA NHL video games are supposed to be accurate simulations depicting the "game" we should be allowed to re-create ALL of the aspects of the "game" as they were at the time. I know EA follows this logic for some of the gear we see or don't see within the game. Otherwise, we wouldn't see all the Alumni players and goalies without helmets/masks and all the goalies with the Jacques Plante style of face masks. Further, we wouldn't see Wayne Gretzky or Jari Kurri wearing the now banned Jofa helmet that provided little or no protection as compared to the other helmets being worn.

EA is missing the boat with some of the special first goalie masks that were worn as well. Several had AWESOME paint schemes applied. If you're not familiar, I urge you to check out these masks via an internet image search: Grant Fuhr's first goalie mask. Dan Bouchard's Calgary Flames mask complete with flames. Terry Sawchuk's Hannibal Lector looking mask. Ken Dryden's classic Habs mask. Or maybe the best of all, Gerry Cheever's mask complete with stitch marks.

Moving on to newer masks, EA is also missing the boat by not including some of the greatest goalie masks of all time: Ed Belfour's Eagle mask. Kelly Hrudey's Hollywood mask. Curtis Joseph's Cujo mask. These are just a few. EA, please don't tell us that these items take that much more effort to do. You've included countless designs and other equipment options throughout the rest of the game (that I seriously question who wants or even uses). You've even included a Kellogg's Tony the Tiger jersey in the other sections of the game for Pete's sake.

EA, you can do better and you should for all the fans and gamers who've supported your game for over two decades now. We're talking mostly about Hall of Fame players here. They deserve Hall of Fame treatment within the game.

EA, PLEASE patch NHL 21 to allow for a no helmet option for the players/goalies and at least for a generic Jacques Plante mask option for the goalies. If you're going to leave out Alumni players such as Bobby Orr and goalies such as Ken Dryden, then please allow us to fully utilize your "Create A Player" option and accurately depict them within the game.

Again, I challenge the EA developers and/or moderator to provide an explanation that has substance.

Yes, you can set a birth date for a player that was born a hundred years ago. They clearly didn't wear a helmet when they played and weren't subjected to the current helmet and/or visor rules.

The game itself comes with players that don't wear helmets, wear old time goalie masks, or don't wear goalie masks at all so there's no reason we can't/shouldn't be able to create players and add them to the alumni teams.

If they don't want to allow players with no helmets on current rosters then fine, don't allow it. But to allow us to create old time players but not allow us to leave the helmets off when the game maker does it themselves is ridiculous.
  • Has anyone noticed the fans in the stands wearing elaborately painted goalie masks that are what we're all wishing were available for the goalies? Someone from EA please explain to me how they can justify the time and effort to design such crowd/fan masks but then not offer them within the create a player section or add them to the Alumni Legends within the game? Not only did they leave out Ken Dryden from the game (even though "Dryden" is included within the play by play name database), but they left out the AWESOME painted goalie mask he wore. All we hear is crickets from EA re: all of these posts year after year. Disappointing and ridiculous.

Just reviewed today's patch (December 3, 2020). All these additions yet no Plante goalie masks added or the ability to create a player/goalie without a helmet/mask. Once again, EA adds items that I question anyone really wanted (besides the NHL Reverse Retro uniforms). It would sure be nice if the EA developers or moderator would respond with a substantive response. We're not asking for things that they didn't already put in the game. Just for the ability to use them within the create a player section. Sad and disappointed again.

Here's the list of what they added:
