Low overall Icons usefulness

Hi guys,

I pretty new to this year HUT and I have been wondering what are the usefulness of the low overall icons cards.
It doesn't seem to have the ability to upgrade them so I was wondering what is so special about those cards.

    Just cards with older players on it. I am disappointed in the way they handled them. When they came out I thought there would be a chance to upgrade them with collectibles but sadly not the case.

    They're basically meant as an inexpensive way to get favourite alumni players early and cheap. People complained last year that it took too long for the non master icon alumni to flow in.

    I build a team with nothing but these Icon players.
    To my surprise I had beaten 90 overall teams in Rivals with them.
    I bleed hockey!!!!!!!!!!

    I was using them in Rivals earlier on as well and doing pretty well but have since moved on from the regular icons to mix of master icons and modern players.

    Yeh this was just for fun and curiosity of their performance. My regular team is pretty stacked 95 offense and 94 defense and goalie depending on my mood since it don’t matter in this game.

    My team is a nice mix of fav players Gretz,Kurri,Tik, Lafleur Bucyk etc. Only Doughty McDavid Lit Carey Price Cover Laine are current players the rest are higher icons. It’s a fun team to play with and very competitive.

    Thx for the answers
    Would be nice to be able to upgrade those icons players. Maybe don't need to have to upgrade to near the meta overall but at least playable. I would like to play with some of them if it wasnt for the really poor overall.
