Interference penalties ( EASHL Club games )

Interference calls in EASHL have always been more lenient than they would be in an actual hockey game, and it's understandable from a video-game perspective. But the last couple of years and NHL 21 in particular it's been ( IMO ) made a bit too loose and it's something I think should be addressed in future games.

There seems to be two things combining to make it a real problem this year. First is an increase in intentional body checks ( they register as a hit in the action tracker ) that should be blatant interference but aren't called.

In this clip the opposing defender doesn't even start moving until well after I've won the draw but is allowed to charge in and body check me without consequence. If you have to start skating after the opponent has already got rid of the puck it should be interference.

The biggest change, and the real problem as I see it is the change to incidental contact over the last couple of years. It's always been used in club games to run picks or slow down back checkers and it's something I think most people accept as a video-game compromise. But in NHL 21 it seems like it's moved from "incidental" contact to outright left-stick hitting territory. The checker even goes into body checking animations.

In this clip I haven't touched the puck in ages, but get blown up in front of the net. ( No it's not NHL 10 ).

In this video there's two clips. The first I'm defending the rush and get body-checked into the corner by a forward attempting to one-time a pass that never came. In the second I never pick up the puck behind the net, but still get creamed coming out the other side.

Or here where I'm nowhere near the puck, but the defender is allowed to turn right into me and lay a hit with no consequences. This isn't "accidental" or "incidental" contact. It's a body check and should be treated as such.

  • This happened last night. Defense is challenging enough this year without allowing offensive players to just blow up defenders in the slot. The hit causes green to lose his stick and allows what would have been an easy cross-crease goal if the pass wasn't picked off.

Does this happen to anyone else or is it just my club? Are the devs aware of this? If so, is this the intended way the game should work or is it actually a tuning problem or a bug?

Been like this for ages - Penalties don't do anything significant out of threes mode anyway so you might as well always go for hits since they can be pretty funny.

LOL this is pretty bad. Why not tune it to be at least a LITTLE more strict, devs?
  • In drop ins I notice the AI gets away with TONS of interference.

If this was Threes Eliminator I'd agree. It's part of the mode and can be fun when the mood strikes.

But these are all from club games, and there are interference penalties in club 3s games. It's just that there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to determine when or if they're called.

All I'm really looking for at this point is an answer for why it's like this. Bug? Tuning issue? Intentional?
  • There are no words to describe how unfathomably inconsistent interference penalties are.

This is what gets a penalty. I didn't even push up on the right stick, I was just skating towards the player on the boards with the puck.

I am conflicted about this. On the one hand I have certainly seen an uptick this year with phantom interference calls.

OTOH I would argue that even if it was not your intent, what you captured here does in fact actually legit LOOK like interference. But ya - it's weird to see it called.

I will confess to occasionally (gleefully even) using the tactic of bumping into someone or getting in a dudes way without using the right stick. It's admittedly a bit sketchy and honestly I feel it's an exploit.

Eashl if the other team has the puck I'm running into or blocking somebody pretty much the whole time regardless of position played, I think its the most effective defense out there this year.

Ideally I'd agree with you. I'm OK with this type of incidental contact not being called interference as a video-game contrivance to offset not currently being able to to quickly side-step without the puck. And yes, it's abused quite a bit but it's at least a known, expected outcome in the game.

What I was really trying to get at was how galling it is that what I posted today IS and interference penalty, but all of the other instances I've posted previously don't get called.

  • I think the LS should be far more dynamic in terms of accelerating, and RS for hit should just be taken off. If you run into a guy at full speed it should be a collision. Frankly I think you should get tangled up with others far easier - and you should be making an effort to be avoiding your opponents to avoid interfering just like real hockey.

That way you wouldn’t shoot the puck going for a hit or get interference going for the shot

Then there is crap phantom calls like this in a drop in game.

I’m the RD and I was just trying to keep the puck in the opposing zone but my C retrieved it first. The opposing player comes barrelling in and makes contact with my C. I don’t even touch the opposing player yet I get a penalty for interference on the play?!
  • This weird interference calls has to do with the physics.

    But it's abit strange.

Cause one time you can 'bump' a player infront of the net without getting a call but other times when it's almost impossible to see if you touch the non-puck carrier player but you get a call.

There’s definitely something that's not 100% right here..

Not just in drop ins...offline is completely broken because the AI can literally get away with EVERYTHING. I'll post the vid of a "netfront tie up"(interference, holding, obstruction holding in it's own right) up at the freaking blueline...but yet it never lets me engage it above the hashmarks.

EASHL is a nightmare for inconsistency. Also, I've noticed that the pre game lobby will show guys using the speedy little builds...but when the game loads they're equal to, if not bigger, than my pwf...but every bit as fast as those little speedsters
