In the settings you can set assistant coach edit lines to "no". Then you have to edit lines manually whenever their is an injury.

I only play GM mode, what I want and what I think everyone wants out of this mode is to really feel like you are managing a hockey team. I think way more depth needs to be added to the players in order to achieve this because right now the players are basically just a number (their overall) and there isn't much more to it…
