I've noticed this more and more in the last few months.
I wish I could remember who said it, but last year someone (who seemed to know what he or she was talking about) made the claim that calculating paths for characters to get from Point A to Point B was one of the bigger memory drains for this game. I'm wondering whether what we are seeing is a kind of "relaxing of the standards" that requires less in way of memory expenditure and hence contributes to the better town stability we have lately witnessed. Pure speculation, of course.
It isnt hard to explain, if you have roads that arent connected a character can walk from one piece of road to the other through any obstacle.
I don't understand how people don't get this...
Sure. But what I (and I think others here) are saying is that more recently characters seem more prone to do this even when they could instead be walking on the roads.
All the roads in my town are connected, almost all characters are on roaming tasks and I have never seen this happen even once.
I did build some new road off in a green pasture just messing around with things, and characters started to walk over to it. They walked across water, through walls or whatever to get to the new road I built. It seems to be obvious what causes this and how

All i can say is that my experience has been quite different. For some time now the roads in my town have all been connected together and, I can assure you, I see my characters wandering off the roads a *lot*.

It's the same for me. All my roads connect at some point. But my town is large, and some roads wind up and around large areas of land. I think this is a major factor in some characters walking offroad.
my town not big and all roads are connected. but i still get these wander off walkers. not a big problem, except for drunken smithers. i have search him everytime.

Ummm no. All my roads are connected... and it happens ALL the time. That picture with homer that area is just a big square made of roads so there's no reason for him to drive right through it like that. Everything is connected lol

At least that makes sense, homer is just mowing the lawn
The more complex the town, the more they start doing odd movements.
I think drunk Smithers is deliberate though. Moves like the zombies did.

Willie walk right through the school to get to his shack (and to walk away from it after a task) in my town.
