I see a couple in my town, but can't tap them. Do I need Homer an Lisa to be done the initial 24hr tasks? Will they disappear if I don't tap them right away? Easily the most confusing event so far (or I'm an idiot).

Yes exactly that, it will all become apparent when homer and lisa finish their 24hr tasks

Yes you can wack snakes and plant eggs in other peoples towns

You earn a special license after you get to 400 snakes. Then you can whack in other towns.

Absolutely naff update. Can't even see any eggs or snakes in my friends towns. Over 100 friends and also there is 1 egg in my town but no where to be seen. I've hidden buildings and tree view to help see the land and still no egg. This updates the worse one so far. And all I've been able to get is 160 eggs just from my own town. It's pathetic.

Not everyone sped up the task, so a lot of your friends list won't even have started being able to place eggs yet as it is less than 24 hours from the update. Chill and see what happens before you get quite so het up about the update

but that isn't what you were complaining about before, the two are not connected (you don't like the update cause your friends aren't playing yet and the bugs)

...it is frustrating not being able to just start with the event activities. It seems like a pretty obvious ploy to get people to spend donuts to speed things up, and that is disappointing (though not particularly surprising). I got excited when I saw the update and logged in, only to remember I had homer and lisa on long quests. They're both in the Simpson's house, so I can't even store it in inventory to cancel the quests and free them up. Thankfully, the quest she's working on is the one prompted by the event, so I guess maybe I should just be happy I'm 13 hours ahead on it.

There's going to be plenty of time to play; give it a chance.

Maybe try going into the move screen and turning off the "eye" for buildings and decorations? It could actually be hidden behind something.
