Try to use the mop or the spray in the school of a friend. I had the same issue and it worked for me (i used the mop).

Once you work around this bug make sure not to mop your own school or click on sideshow bob. It will likely trigger the bug again.

You don't necessarily need to store a tree; it could be ANY one item. I usually store a house, then immediately place it back. This glitch has literally happened to me HUNDREDS of times, and it's damned irritating.

Also be careful after you've visited other neighbours; your star total will drop to zero again when you leave the screen, so don't start collecting items until you've store/restored something.
