That's really subjective... But it is useful in that it is the only way to get the Kang character. And you kind of get a 2-for-1 because once the ray gun gets wrecked, you get a second bright, shiny new one.

It's kind of annoying that Kang only gets treats and XP though, no cash. Unless the gun gets tax it's not an investment at all, just a really big piece of decoration and a cool-looking character.

You get bonus points with the Ray-gun after each job.
Perhaps after Haloween, Kang will give cash instead of a treat, purely speculative though.
I bought the duff brewery as well as the Ray-gun with donuts and out of the two, I prefer the Duff Brewery.

As stated above, subjective... depends on how much money you want to spend to play the game. As far as I know, Kang is not necessary for completing the Halloween quests or obtaining other Halloween characters/buildings.

He's a great looking character, though, and has some of the best spoken lines ("I'll just chill out in my GLASS DOME!").

I've read a post claiming that in "crack the whip" mode, he will pop passing zombies (haven't seen this myself).

Bart's "run away with Kang" task looks awesome (he carries Kang on the handlebars of his bike), is short (10 minutes), and one of the quickest ways to earn candy.

I had the $10+ to spend and don't regret it. He's a fun character. But you could get by just fine without him.

I don't regret it, and I am incredibly cheap. I broke my no donut purchasing rule to get kang. he also has cool catchphrases. I think he's going to stick around after holloween. Wait, you get a new ray gun when kang crash lands on the first one? How?

Kang popping zombies with whip does not work. I have tried it numerous times with him going into a full horde of 30+ zombies and it did nothing multiple times.

So I've managed to save up 150 donuts - I've got Moleman but none of the other premiums - Ray Gun or a better option to spend them???

You get Kodos which is a premium character.
You get the wrecked raygun and spaceship
You get another raygun whihc gives you 3.75% bonus

the best part of all is that you get to have both aliens

It cost me the 150 as advertised
a little disappointing as i was hoping to save 50 donuts but doesn't matter as i was planning on getting it anyways

Does anyone know if the ray gun is definitely going to come down in price before the event is over? Cause I have no chance of getting 150 donuts in time and I want that Ray gun so I can have both aliens running around.

Nobody knows for sure. My priorities for Halloween premium stuff was Marge and her cauldron, Devil Flanders, but I decided to purchase the raygun after purchasing the two others, because I am afraid it will not come back. It gives you a premium character, and two decorations. So for me, it was well worth it.
