Not to put to fine a point on it, but... just no. People have been debating it and complaining about these issues for a long, long time. People have had problems with the character of Apu for a long time.
Personally, I don't think I particularly agree with Hari Kondabolu's criticisms, although I think that because he's made it quite clear him and people he knows were bullied using Apu, something needs to change. Not necessarily the voice, but what Apu does in the show.
However, the 'response' to it by the writers was pathetic. It didn't address it, they instead chickened out of doing anything. They come off particularly bad. The writers came across as quite cowardly. It was quite spiteful and as a Simpsons fan, I don't appreciate that.
Indian Americans have been telling others of how they were bullied using Apu, and instead of addressing it the writers decided to bully them more.
I love what Hari said afterwards - to make the point that they aren't going to change Apu, they changed Lisa instead, and that is quite spiteful. Hari is clearly a massive fan of The Simpsons, and they shouldn't treat anyone, especially fans, like that.

I do have something to add to my previous comments. Clearly the higher ups, Jean/Groening don't care at all but they're missing a chance at a good story and the possibility of making a smart story. Let Apu say he's been code-switching to fit in with the yellow (white) majority. Turn their stereotypes and prejudices back on them.
Hank is doing a good job with Apu. Back in the days, Indians themselves might not have the language skills to pull it off. They may be speaking better now but they may have lost the native accents. The accent gives Apu his charm.

Just my opinion, of course, but the way in which you’re expressing your viewpoint seems to gloss over some of the very real complexities of the “Apu” issue. A few points. First, you note that “it’s been happening before the Simpsons and it’ll happen long after the Simpsons has finished.” I find this sort of it’s-always-been-this-way-so-it’s-okay analysis unconvincing. If we were to universally adopt this approach, minstrel shows and blackface would still be common. Social and cultural norms and perceptions shift over time. Take the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s as an example. Even at the time of its release in 1961 the character of Mr. Yunioshi by Mickey Rooney sparked some unease. In today’s Hollywood such a caricatured portrayal of an Asian by an white actor in yellowface would be far less likely.
Second, you note here and in previous posts that the creative team is doing a “good” or “great” job with the character. I hope I’m not putting words in your mouth but this seems to be code for the view that you think that the portrayal of Apu has been and continues to be fine. You thus appear to be minimizing or dismissing the view of others who find the way in which the character is presented more problematic. I’m not pointing fingers at anyone here in the forum, but in a general sense I’ve always found it interesting how people are able to rationalize the ridicule of “others” as perfectly reasonable or even as a positive good; yet, when the shoe is on the other foot, when they or the clique to which they belong becomes the object of particularly barbed insults or broad satire, the same individuals who were previously sneering that folks need to develop thicker skins are suddenly declaiming about the need for safe spaces.
