Apparently, buying and selling Weather Stations and Chalmers' car offer plenty of XP for farming to level up. Can't say I have ever seen the appeal of that sort of grinding just to get 1, 2 or 3 free doughnuts myself, but plenty of people around here seem to swear by it, so maybe I am just a bit of a weirdo.
If I'm halfway through a bonus level and then there's an update, does my bonus XP carry over to Level 36? Or does it just simply vanish?
You certainly don't lose it. In fact, IIRC, when the level 35 update landed, I was approaching the end of a bonus level and I was automatically granted level 35 as I already had more XP than was required to get it ... and the XP left over started me off towards another bonus.
Also, bump up your percentage. White fences cost 1 donut and they give you 0.05%, but that's the best rate. Homer's Hammock is 5 donuts for 0.25, which is the same rate.
Higher your percentage, higher your weather station yield.

Well I bought and sold weather stations over and over again until I ran out of money and I managed to fill my XP bar up half way. I've stuck all my characters on 8 hour tasks so I should have more money to use in the morning.

Hopefully you leave enough money to buy any new buildings/characters released when level 36 hits, it would suck having to wait while other people have already built them
I did it! Spent an hour collecting goo and xp from friends towns and when i got back to my own i got a message saying i reached the bonus level. I got 2 donuts, and i manged to get 3 donuts from ghosts in the other towns so i got 5 in an hour.
Now just to reach the bonus level again and get more.
