Hmm, where to start...
In game money is not something you should worry about, it comes easily.
Do not waste donuts on speeding up tasks, everything comes to he who waits.
Shorter time tasks earn more money proportionally.
Avoid house farms unless you want the wrath of this forum cast upon you!
If you want to progress quests, try and synchronise tasks so all character are 'free' at the same time - some quests require two characters to interact and if one is tied up on a task, it won't happen.
Don't worry about levelling up, again, this will come, in the words of Steve Jobs: 'The Journey is the Reward'.
Make your town look nice, that's half the game.
Contribute to this forum, it's fun, people often post interesting challenges that add to the game, and if you're an addict, you're in good company!
Turn of local notifications, until you're happy when an important business meeting is interrupted by Homer piping up 'Better them than me!' (Yep, it happened).
Ensure you have an origin account, visit friends and vandalise their buildings, it earns you and them money.
The list goes on, but I'm sure I'll not be the only player to answer you - they're a pretty friendly bunch on here!

I have made sure that the town looks neat. I am up to level 17 at current but now planning my day around this game lol
I wish we could sticky this! Great tips!
Just for contrast, I disagree with each of these suggestions.
I bookmarked this topic for reference in case of similar requests. You couldn't have been clearer
I personally disagree, but what's interesting in this game is how we all play differently.
Set everyone on 60m jobs, and check back every hour. (It only takes 5 minutes to reassign every hour). By doing this you'll be making significantly more money than assigning them longer jobs. Plus there has n't been a character so far that does not have a 60m job.
Right before I go to bed at night I assign them 6h or 12h shifts (depends how long I'm sleeping in). That's how I maximize earnings. It's worked pretty well so far.
I do the same with farming on Cletus' farm (Tomacco is 60min).
The best way to make money from characters tasks is to send them on many short tasks rather than one long one. I now try and use a 4hr cycle as I have maxed out on XP on lvl 23 but am still trying to build up my cash reserves for land and decorations. Overnight I usually use an 8hr task and normally if a character is given a task of 8 or 12 hrs I leave it so I can do it overnight rather than as the game gives the task to do.
Just wanted to say you are moving into the expensive part of the game so you will need lots of cash for the forth coming buildings.
House farming does bring you in cash but can look ugly if placed all together tight up against each other but if you can spread the buildings out they can be incorportated into your overall plan especially if you only intend to farm on a fairly small scale, but some people have hundreds of one colour house.
There isn't a right or wrong way to play the game and what's right for one player is wrong for another, some farm and others don't but at the end of the day it's your town so do what you want and you'll be happy and that is the most important thing as far as I am concerned.
Use of the forum will enhance your overall game experience, I found it by accident but I now visit daily, it can become as additictive as the game is!
I started off with a large brown house farm, and found it invaluable during the early part of the game. I've since trimmed this down somewhat now other things are earning good money. I also have a pink house farm, but it's very spread out with paths and trees and doesn't look too bad...and then I have 10 blue houses rammed together that I'm currently debating what to do with. I suspect by the time this weekend is over all my brown houses will be gone, and I'll arrange my blue houses so they look much better.
And again, as julesg007 says, people play this how they want, which is part of the fun. I'm half-tempted to start a new game with nothing but intensive house farms, just to rake in the money as fast as possible and see how quickly I can progress that way. I suspect I won't though, there's just too much to occupy me with my current game.
I approved a stack of friends via Origin in the early days, but being aesthetically minded and also easily annoyed by over-done crash-likely farm towns, I've dropped several people over the past few weeks in deference to those who are building better looking towns.
/\ again, like Tony suggested - short tasks during the day if you have the time to check in regularly, keeping the characters on similar timescales - i.e. Growing Tomacco, sending a bunch of characters shopping at the Kwik-E-Mart, CBG to the Gulp, Martin to rehearse his play and Burns on his jog means they'll all end at a similar time.
Longer overnight tasks is an easy way to ensure that you're making the most of the time you're not awake and maximising your money and XP returns.
I'd also second the 'use the forum' statements, I've only been on here a couple of weeks but found the community to be pretty laid back (bar the odd trolling numpty) and its good to see what other have experienced, done with their towns etc.
If you don't buy doughnuts you will eventually get some while leveling up, cleaning springfield or with the homer/myPad tricks. This is an important tip, be careful when you tap a character or a building; I cannot remember how many doughnuts I have wasted misstapping and speeding up tasks :x .
Also, Premium characters give extra earnings than normal characters. For example, for a 60 min job a normal character would get $70 when a premium character would get $105.
I'm planning to use some 8)
But i'll not farm houses. Ok i have some houses of the Same color but they are part of my city and not build for tax collecting
Having said all that, I admit that I've dropped some house farmers, but not because of my delicate sensibilities. I've dropped them when the farms were all that I could get to in the town and could not scroll around w/o activating one. Tapping brown houses provides little help to one's neighbors. Most of us try to tap to vandalize (helps improve righteousness) or to seek out your best building so that it resets the timer for faster payouts. I've also dropped farmers whose towns caused my game to crash.
My tip (besides the veiled hint about what you should do or avoid doing when YOU visit your neighbors): have a blast with this game and the rich tapestry of personalities present on this forum.
Caveat, don't spend 30 donuts on the squeaky voice teen, he'll likely appear in a mystery box.
Save cash
Only buy land when you need it. :P
?? Let's call the whole thing off! ??
