So here is the BIG question Since EA has not responded 12+ hours....should I collect from these buildings and send the new character(s) on tasks/questlines?
Yes. You will be waiting a few days, if not weeks to get a response. EA won't undo anything in your town. The only thing they can do, is give you back the lost donuts. So you will end up with all these new items for free(, that is if they restore your donuts).

Man I hope I get them back!! And my hard earned Thanksgiving money!!
Pleased to see my password isn't on that list of common ones... but I do use it for other things, time to change it I guess. I really should learn to be more safety conscious.
OP I hope EA sorts it out for you ASAP.
How strong is your password? Do you use it in more than one place, if yes you may be asking for trouble. Is your password on this list of the 25 most used passwords?
I'm not trying to shift the blame on you, but a lot of people are guilty of lax passwords and are an easy target for a "hack".
There was a really good story on NPR about the most commonly used passwords, and how easy it was to crack the majority of people's password. A funny side note from the story, if you used only numerals for your password, then the most common password that was not just 1234567890 in some form?
I really wish you the best of luck; but the same thing happened to me just after Whacking Day. They sold off almost everything I'd "won" with snakes, plus a stack of other premium and non-premium buildings (including character buildings), bought a metric ***load of rubbish (e.g. nuclear warheads) with all my donuts; and even though I logged a case in May, I've still not got the donuts back.
Worse, when I chase it up I get a canned "you already have a case" response which doesn't help. I know I have a case - it's 6 months old! I would like an update!

I think this just happened to me. I posted about it in the Bugs forum.
I logged in to my tablet Wednesday afternoon and got a message my town hadn't saved, so I went to my phone and got the same message. I logged in anyway to find a crap ton of my town missing, most of my money gone and 90% of the land I had not purchased, all open. Some of the things that vanished were premium items, Whacking Day buildings and Howard's Flowers. I can see that I can buy most of the things back, eventually. But the premium items are going to be difficult to get back unless EA grants me enough donuts to buy them. I suppose I can kiss Howard's Flowers good bye for good.
I think we need a special Support forum for everyone that's had this. It does sound really upsetting, especially for those who have spent money or been playing for a really long time. I know I'd be crushed if it happened to me. (Especially if they tapped my corn. Oh. My. God.)
Okay, I just registered here to post a reply to this thread. I've been lurking the forum since I started playing.
I just had a cross log in a few moments ago, I fired up my town, and lo and behold I was smack dab in the middle of someone else's Springfield. It was obviously not mine, mine is bigger and I am not the level of the other town. I could not figure out a user name of the other town. I just closed the application, and restarted and was back to my town. I've spent around $250 on doughnuts for my Springfield and my wife's Springfield. I would hate to have someone ruin my town. Most of my stuff is premium content, and now I'm paranoid about losing it.
UPDATE: Got this message this morning---doesn't quite cover what was spent, but at least they tried to be funny about it--
"Thank you for contacting EA regarding your Issue with The Simpsons: Tapped Out
My name is CJ and I am an EA Game Specialist.
I have received and reviewed your case in relation to your Simpsons Tapped Out issue and investigated your issue
I am very sorry to hear of the issues you had been experiencing and can only empathize with the situation
Having reviewed the case notes and issue described, I have today added 300 Donuts back to your account, however the buildings cannot be removed, and therefore cannot be refunded.
On a positive note, at least they are earning back the cash they cost to build and Miss Springfield should brighten any town.
Bart apologizes for messing with your account and for all the delays, and assures us it will not happen again
If there is any further assistance we can offer, please do not hesitate to contact us in the future, and we will be happy to assist you in any way we can.

Aw passwords, there was time almost all Unix administrators used the same password "Iamgod". some made it all caps.
While the list of 25 most common passwords does change slightly from time to time, my suggestion is never use a word found in a dictionary. Any dictionary. After using the most common passwords, the dictionary attack is used which is simply trying every word in a dictionary as a password.

Yep, the 80's classic, "867-5309"
Before y'all start trying to hack me, I now use something slightly more obscure and secure.
i have a family member that uses that one too! i knew it was bad, but i didn't think it was "top 25 worst" bad... hah!

Uggghh----This doesn't sound promising

So frustrating and a bit crushing.
'Cos that John Travolta movie was freaking AWESOME.

EA's probly got bots scouring the web, looking for mentions.
I had an issue, posted in bugs n glitches, literally received an update that fixed it within 24 hrs or so.
Thanks! Basically they paid me back for about 1 of the buildings I received :?
