Yeah you have to be promoted. The exact mechanisms are a little unclear but the consensus seems to be that mods are doing it once a month.
I think it was discussed in the following thread.

I attempt to make my posts worthwhile, and here's my value to this thread, having bp'd scores of times.
It takes 50 posts to get 'promoted'. You cannot even use or images until then.
I get the avitar and signature thing, but no quotes or images or url links? Just stupid.
Then again EA is a huge gaming company and hackers are sure to come. But is this a deterrent? And how about use a different server? And how about moderating the forums? There are under 100 posts a day, you can't even get an intern to observe? [/rant]
You're wrong about post numbers. I have 45 now and I was promoted today. It's more about activity from what the PM hinted at and I guess the number of topics I started that had good substance to them helped.
I had over 200 "worthwhile" posts before getting promoted. And I got promoted the same day everyone else got promoted. The same thing happened a month ago, so I really don't think it has anything to do with number of posts.
Sorry everything above me looks like crap, do hackers use ?
Maybe it's a month. Looks like your member date was the 25th of last month, this is the 26th of this month, and has nothing to do with number of posts, or even moderators. I'm making the assumption of time at this moment. But I look forward to more information.
My promotion was exactly 6 weeks after joining, so definitely not exactly one month to promotion. I did start 3-4 threads among my 50 posts in that time, so that could be part of it. The message is auto generated from "system" and EA reps don't seem to moderate or engage here enough that they would be manually upgrading people, so it has to be some sort of criteria that is batch-processed periodically.
