You've got a long ways to go. The actual item cap is around 7400, maybe a little more. Items in your storage do not count towards this total. After 4500 you start to get those warnings every 150 items you have.

Just ignore the warning and keep decorating I'm in the high 6000s now, though, so I'm starting to get a bit worried about reaching the *actual* limit!
