Download the Origin application. It is much easier to manage friends using the feature on your computer.

Would be really nice to be able to do it from your phone though. I have about ten friends who haven't updated and played in months. I wonder how hard it would be to implement a feature like that?

I agree with this, it'd be easier to do so on the desktop because if they implement it in game, that's just going to add to your load times between neighbours (including the friends menu) and there's a probability that the game might crash once you delete someone because it needs to reload the new list
