I'm not sure there is anything behind the scenes this close to the major update.
In fact, from what I've read the next update is going to be a different or newer version of the game via iTunes download not an EA add-on. This version is about to become history.
It's a Beetlejucie reference. It also happened recently with Wil Wheton on Reddit.

Also, though it's not too relevant, I think the Christmas update will be tomorrow (Wednesday) for sure- the massive Halloween update came through the app store, and there is an app store update coming tomorrow (which isn't much of a surprise unless you've been living under a rock)
