But did you try maybe using one (or a tight group) of the tall thin trees in pink pots. And Maybe skip the low planter if needed, to get the trees in there ... Those only take up one square of space and are IMHO a lot easier to tuck closely into a space ... But can't gauge from your pic ...

You could move back the wall a bit to accomodate the stairway. Fill the green area along the wall with various round trees and shrubery to give it an inviting feel as well as hide any gaps along the stairs on the lower levels. I might suggest potted plants and the decorative lamps with hanging plants flanking both stairs and carry that theme to the deck above.

Boy did I underestimate a complete redesign. At this rate It'll be finished by the next Christmas update.
