Could you put the tree behind the planter? Maybe the tree trunk would not be as noticible and it would look more like a shrub....

The image labeled "with the flaw showing" doesn't show up ...

But did you try maybe using one (or a tight group) of the tall thin trees in pink pots. And Maybe skip the low planter if needed, to get the trees in there ... Those only take up one square of space and are IMHO a lot easier to tuck closely into a space ... But can't gauge from your pic ...

+1 that's what I'd do. With the boardwalk trees and lampposts

You could move back the wall a bit to accomodate the stairway. Fill the green area along the wall with various round trees and shrubery to give it an inviting feel as well as hide any gaps along the stairs on the lower levels. I might suggest potted plants and the decorative lamps with hanging plants flanking both stairs and carry that theme to the deck above.

Edited the first post to correct the link.

Went to work with a few of the tips here.

This is where it's going now:

The seemingly random objects are the things I tried to use, but haven't been moved out of the way yet.

Boy did I underestimate a complete redesign. At this rate It'll be finished by the next Christmas update.

WOWSERS. That looks stunning. (And most inviting!)

That looks great! Once you started filling in, the proportions seem much more believable.

And yeah, redesign takes commitment. I'm finding myself obsessed with it, and yet never able to complete it!

Thanks for the help and feedback.

@obake-odori: Your "Tap" in front of your stage rocks!

I think this will be all the 3d fakery and hedge art I'll do:
