Is there really no way to reset Homer?

Normally you store the building which the character is associated with to rest them or take them off an already started task.
Homer isn't associated with any building as such as he was the first character in the game with a blank piece of land to re-build Springfield and you can't actually store the Simpsons house.
So I would suspect that Homer cannot be reset, but if I am wrong I'm sure that I'll be put right!

That would be correct.
Lisa Came with the Simpson house which is not storable so she also can't be returned if lost
Characters without an associated structure include individual premiums (like Brandine) and those characters that "unlock" with a building but don't actually come with that building (Fat Tony; Rod and Todd) as well as Homer and Lisa.
Any of these characters going missing means you have to contact ea. In terms of canceling a task, though, they can just be put in storage themselves, with the exception of Homer and Lisa, who cannot be stored under any circumstance.
