Can't zap UFO

Something I noticed today in a friend's Springfield. I went to zap the UFO and got the message I couldn't as my ammo had run out but I could use donuts to complete this instead. I opted to do this but nothing happened. I didn't get any donuts taken and the Springfield I was in then became unresponsive.

Any ideas?
