Why only probes/ray guns/DNA strands from 30 friends?

You can get currency from 90 friends if you only tap one alien per town.
This makes no sense, who would spent the time to visit the other 70 friends that aren't going to give you event currency?
I would, but I like donuts. (done with FP prizes.)

I'll also point out that UFOs only seem to appear in towns I haven't tapped yet. Leaving a few people untapped until I have ammo makes some sense to me. *shrug*

What you can't start at the next letter and do a different batch of 30 the next day?

I think your complaint here is unjustified. We all have the same limitation. Don't punish your neighbors for it. Do A-H, then I-Z. Not that difficult.
All my designs look unfinished because i can't place as many plants, streetlights, and fences as i would like. PLEASE REMOVE THE LIMIT, EA!

It does make sense ... from EA's point of view. Fewer probes/ray guns/etc. means more $ spent on donuts by players.

This makes no sense, who would spent the time to visit the other 70 friends that aren't going to give you event currency? The Friend Points prizes aren't going anywhere, the Powers That Be made an odd choice in not providing incentive to visit all your friends. And this makes it waaay harder to get the final prize in the round. That would be 300 currency/day for the dedicated, and a more easily gotten Last Prize for those willing to put in the time.

I'm not getting past H anymore on my friends list. Sorry other people, I'm not putting in half an hour of tapping for money and friend points I'll get eventually anyway.

Because it's a game, and games have to have restrictions and boundaries. Otherwise they wouldn't be games.
