How Good is "Pretty Good"?

    Words or phrases like these are always relative. So how good is unique to the usage at the time.

    Sometimes people say "pretty good" when they mean "better than mediocre"
    But sometimes it's said when they really mean "surprisingly good", which is what I think the OP was receiving as a compliment from her boss.

    We generalize far too often because we are usually communicating too quickly to be overly precise with our word selection. But usually we could always say it better if we thought about it more. For example, there is always a more appropriate word than "nice".
    "You're the most negative person I've ever seen on here. Constantly."
