I love using a stylus, but the ones I bought were cheap and they wore out after a day of use so im back to using my fingers. It is so much easier using a stylus, I plan to buy a better quality one soon.
I understand others with this problem can recover if they backup their device, then restore to NEW. If you do this, you could probably then restore your backup.
With temporary access to a different iPad (thanks mom!), I've gotten reacquainted with my Springfield tonight. I even was brave enough to ale Gil up on his offer and bought doughnuts.
I also learned that playing Tapped Out with a stylus is actually quite a bit easier ("to order a special dialling wand, please mash you palm into the keypad...).
Well, at least this proves that is not my account that has crapped out. Is just the interface between my account and the iPad I actually own.
Great Mike, nice to have your town back eh.
Were you using iPad first generation? My little cousin has been locked out as well using the old version and now his parents broke down and picked up a new iPad for him, which he will get tomorrow.
Hope you will be able to keep playing, welcome back!

I did the restore as new, wiped the ipad and got the game up but it still asks for itunes sign in which is disturbing.
Thanks dromtsul for suggestion and thread links and thanks to my friends. We shall see how stable the game is now, I havent visited other
Towns yet. Also have to get a refund from itunes
I am amazed how addicted to this game i have become.
Argh! I tried a full backup and reboot of my iPad.
You can try this... Delete the Tapped Out game from your iPad *before* you back it up. That should (hopefully) keep any tapped out data out of your backups and let you do a truly clean restore.
Now back up your iPad.
Reset to factory defaults and restore your backup.
Re-download the Tapped Out app - it will re-download the ~250MB of updates.
Re-login to your origin account and your Springfield should restore.
If that doesn't do it, then I don't know what will!
You've probably already tried this, but make sure you enabled to allow in-app purchases. I just bought some donuts with an iTunes card (yes, sadly I caved in). They showed up immediately and I wasn't even asked for my password.
Screw that limited time crap! Like a bad smell, I'm back baby!!
After continuing to mess around with resetting my ipad, I finally broke down and gave it a full flush -- erased all the contents and settings. Then, during the setup I did NOT restore my backup. Once up and running, I logged back in to my Apple ID, downloaded Tapped Out and voila, back in!
No idea why this extreme would be necessary (grumble, stupid EA...) but at least I've finally found a method. I'm awfully happy that we really didn't have that much on our ipad that I would have lost/worked to restore.

That stylus is interesting. Is it easier to move things around? (I'm thinking tap accuracy)
Now get collecting those coins

Nope!
Darn EA. This is the most infuriating bug....
