1. Donuts is the American spelling.
2. "The Simpsons" is an American TV show.
3. "Donuts" is what's used in the show and the game (unless there's a British English version of the game that uses doughnuts).
Donuts. Deal with it.
But yeah, American and English spelling differences are funny.

No, I will not "deal with it"! You Americans are bastardizing the English language!

I wouldn't say donuts is the American spelling. I use donuts on here, although if you follow Associated Press style (I'm in journalism), it would be doughnuts.
Good work. Wikipedia top trumps all other considerations and so the correct answer is doughnuts and there is no longer any need for this poll. You may of course continue to use the word donut but you do need to be aware that when doing so you are in fact wrong.
Yup, doughnuts all the way! Donuts is a bastardization, and is fine in contexts that use that spelling (i.e., I use "donuts" to talk about the premium currency here because that's how they're spelled in the show/game.).
The dictionary-approved spelling for the ring-shaped cake made of dough and fried in fat is doughnut. The shortened donut has been around since the late 1800s, but it wasnt popularized until the late 20th century, when the successful American doughnut chain Dunkin Donuts made it ubiquitous. Today, writers outside the U.S. still favor doughnut by a wide margin. Donut appears about a third of the time in published American writing.
Donut is a simpler spelling, so it may grow even more common now that it has a foothold. Those of us who dont wish to help Dunkin Donutss branding would be wise to resist the trend, though.
