The items on the New tab are just the most recent things you've put in your inventory. They never go away unless you use them or put more things away than the New tab will hold.

There is an encircled 8 on the icon, but none when you open inventory? Maybe you aren't opening the inventory completely. Open inventory. There are three tabs on the left. Beside the middle tab is an arrow. Tap the arrow to slide the panel open and reveal all the categories.
