I've noticed it's really bad in my b town. It freezes the worst when using the character locator or event menu to jump to my dump/recycling area from Springfield Heights. It also doesnt seem to like me tapping around when currencies are lying around. Swiping around town old-school, and taking my time collecting has really helped.
I don't have the freezing, but my wife does. I am crashing more and more frequently during Friend visits though. I'm lucky if I can get three towns. Mostly right between towns after the first visit. I am SO glad I didn't buy the license, it would've been useless.
We've both disconnected our tracks and her freezing has nearly stopped in her SF, but we both can't do visits. Sorry Neighborinos.
What good is this beautiful monorail if we can't have it running?
It's been effectively unplayable for me for 2 days. Since shortly after the last update. I can mostly collect money just time but anything Monorail related take 3 or 4 freezes before I can do it. The game has been come make a couple of moves, go to friends menu to sync. Try to do something it freezes, then it freezes again. Finally I can clear the metal. A couple of more freezes and I can use the metal to get B&W.
I contacted EA Support yesterday. Their only solutions were to wait for an upcoming patch, or roll back the game by some unknown amount.
I was almost a couple of days ahead towards the rail yard. I'm now slightly behind.
I have a question ... This just started about an hour ago... The game starts over but then doesn't fully load it disconnects ... Anyone else having this issue?
My freezing issue went on for over two days. The moment Springfield appeared from the loading screen... done. My call resulted in having to wait a while to login again, but worked.
I encourage, get them on the phone.
When there was The [Broken] Wheel. The horror... The Horror!
I liked having multiple trains, so for the three stations that were connected I intentionally removed one piece of track and hid the gap behind a building. The fourth station was still slowly building enough track to meet with the others. The past few days the crashing has been insane. Often can only tap 1-2 things before freezing again.
At first I thought it might be the multiple trains, so I re-connected those tracks so I went from four to two. Absolutely no change. Then I tried just shifting every station one space, so the trains couldn't move. After doing that to two of them I INSTANTLY saw a difference. Don't think I needed to the second two, but I did anyway. Clearly the trains are the problem.
As for friend visits, I find I almost always freeze if I tap a third item in a neighbor's town. As long as I stick to two each I'm almost always ok. And even if I go back to the town later to grab the third, it still causes problems.
Edited to add:
The "three tap" problem is also happening in Other Springfield which doesn't have a monorail. So I'm pretty sure that's not what's causing it with the other neighbors either.

The trains definitely seem to be the problem. I already had the stations disconnected to I went the next step. I stored all my stations so the trains aren't even on the screen and my game seems to be working again. What's interesting is that Rats seem act like characters. Storing the building seemed to release the rats. But, I can't be sure.
This is painfully time consuming! I've been having the crash when visiting neighbors since the event. Delete, reinstall and everything. I finally called EA a few days ago, and still no luck. They didn't seem to have any issues on their device, and suggested I try playing on another one myself. I am playing on an iPhone6 plus, and do not think for a moment that this is the cause. But that was all the EA rep could come up with.
The thing that seems to help is wait until the currency clears, Collect and absolutely no rising currency text. Then forward or backward arrow to visit another Springfield. No guarantees with that method, it still crashes after a while. That only seems to get through a few neighbor visits than rushing through without waiting to collect. I also tried disconnecting tracks from all my stations, that made no difference. I really HOPE EA fixes this bug.

Until/If EA does something about this, my guess is that you need to free up some RAM. There are a number of articles on the web that talk about how. For example, google "iphone-6-1gb-ram-problem.htm".
I have an older Galaxy Samsung Tablet, and only having 1 GB RAM is an issue for me also. I freed up as much RAM as I could and it helped. I still cannot connect track to my station and some neighbor towns freeze on me.

^ Exactly this happens to me too.
While I occasionally froze in friend's town without the monorail running. For me the town's I would freeze in had the monorail running.
To avoid freezing I would have to quickly navigate away from the monorail so it was off screen. Then I could tap 3 items.
I'm pretty sure in order to have the monorail running we can't get away with older devices anymore. I just upgraded and I'm not seeing any of the issues I was before. Doesn't matter if a monorail is running now on friend visits.
I've also taken Neglecterino's advice and disabled/stopped all applications (bloatware, non system apps) that I won't use on the device. TSTO and system apps are the only thing running.
ETA: Another couple things I did while freezing that helped:
- store all NPCs
- keep characters on indoor tasks where possible
- clear buildings of cash before trying to free up characters at recycling centres
- move all pics/music etc. to external card or off device/phone memory
- uninstall any downloaded apps you no longer use
Basically try to reduce animations as much as possible and free up memory. Lag was reduced a fair amount for me if buildings/tasks were clear and characters not related to the event were indoors.

This is what I had to do to get the freezing to stop. Eventually I'll deal with this, for now I am just getting through the event.

Yes this!
I am really looking forward to riding my monorail. I can actually "ride the rail" in a few of my neighbors towns, I'm very jealous.

I did the same thing. No problems since.
