Try staying near landing zone or a road and they will come to you.
I just move quickly side to side thru the town looking for them. I don't spend much time in one town. 101 friends and only 30 hits you can move quickly on this event

The landing zone when you visit friends is the campfire, and the nightmares that spawn in your friends' town depend on who is telling a story at the campfire.
Martin: Zombies
Lisa: Snakes
Milhouse: Bunnies
Bart: Skeletons
That helps to know what to look for.
