Same here except the opposite. Works fine on my tablet but not on my phone. They are both android devices so I would think they would both update fine or not at all.

It did this to me on my Galaxy tab. I had to tap the "want" button on the update screen, then chhose to open it in my internet, then when it half loaded, it popped up another selection to open, and I pushed play store. Maybe that will work for you.
