Trolllllls

Prev1
I have no interest in considering the motives of 'trolls,' but I'd like to add my opinion about their relationship to this forum.

I don't think that there are a disproportionate number of 'trolls' among the users of this forum. I can think of only a few that post regularly, and a few more whom I haven't seen much of in my year of reading. The moderation here is sufficient in that regard.

At the risk of stating the obvious: There are LOTS of trolls on the internet. I have not been around much, but even I have seen forums/sites that were WAAAAAAYY worse off than this place.

At any rate-- good luck with this... um... thought experiment.

Best to just ignore them, including not making posts. Most of this type of behaviour is juvenile based, bullying based and attention seeking. You can't "fix" or "help" people that resort to this behaviour from posting responses on a forum. If no one plays, there is no game to play. Pretty boring to talk to yourself on a forum.

    +1

To OP, if you want to see real troll action, try reading comments on news articles. Even worse is reading those that allow FB comments.

OP - if you're truly interested in learning more Jonathan Bishop seems to be an active researcher in this area. You can find his articles at scholar.google.com and most are available via pdf without a subscription.

Note: I haven't checked him out beyond seeing a decent amount of citations. While I doubt it, he could be cited for being way off base. But either way reading research papers on the topic are where you'll get your answers. Better if he works in a multidisciplinary team with psych etc.

I think some forum members didn't get along with/ or fell out of favor with, some people on this forum, so they come back to try and make people miserable because they got their feelings hurt. It's so obvious sometimes, and for the most part, I wasn't aware most of the things that happened, until they started trolling.

I think some people take this place way too seriously. Life is too short to let some faceless crap on a forum bother you. I understand everyone comes here for different reasons, but sometimes this place just baffles me.

"Good God", just put the computer/device down and go hangout with some real people!

I don't feel like there are many trolls on this forum at all. Besides, it's been a long time since we've had a high quality troll anyway.

I have very thick skin so maybe I don't notice but I don't think I have ever seen any amount of trolling at all on this forum. Mods keep this joint pretty clean IMHO

They are here, but giving credit to the Mods and also to forum members, they just don't get the attention they want. They can't disrupt or cause havoc like they have in the past. I think they try to set traps and lure other people into behaving badly. Thankfully most people no longer fall for the bait, from newly started accounts or people with very few posts.

Some people lose their heads when they think they've got an audience, it's usually best to ignore them.

what Dalton said and I applaud all of you for being so civil in this discussion. I've spent a lot of nights researching trolling since I've been a mod. If everyone ignores, it drives the troll away. Like Nissa said " Pretty boring to talk to yourself on a forum". Feed it, troll gets what it came for. Nothing please me more than when I'm in a thread where the troll has posted and everyone has skipped right past its comments to continue the conversation. I'm all like right on!

    Im not a troll im a Hob-Goblin

    However what constitutes a "troll"?
What makes a man seek power, control, authority over this terrible power we've come to accept as the power of the "Troll", i wish we could turn to an expert but as none are available or have been banned, i shall try and fill in with my knowledge.

    I dont know.
I saw a troll, curiously playing an online multiplayer EA sports game (coincidence or fate?) he was purposely failing and saying dumb things i shan't post them here as they are very, very dumb. (something about pooping his pants and forgetting his name)
Point is the other players had been patient and tried to help him improve, he simply found enjoyment in annoying them.
Another one had him playing a multiplayer racing game, he raced the opposite direction constantly crashing to other players while continually swearing it wasnt him but another player with the same car, everyone on the team speak was annoyed.

Point is if the jokes only funny to you and annoys everyone else, your probably a troll.
If only one person laughs, its probably an "acquired" taste, if everyone BUT one person laughs, they probably didnt get it (or they're Kanye West, South Park Reference)

Spambots are another problem, from a market standpoint theyre logic baffles me, why spam here in a game based on the Simpsons?
We're probably the greatest shrinking market after the simpsons popularity started sinking after the 90's, whether they spam things like free donuts or male enhancement, this is probably the worst place to spam that.
Seriously dont they realize we're crazy?!?!?

I use to have a big book of Grimm fairy tales. Didn't at least one story end with human contact turning the trolls happy, or did they all just end badly. I can't remember.

First of this forum is for a game which is based on an outrageous animated series. I don't believe that many things can actually bother us, aside from the fake update pages when things are slow. Although once I remember a member writing about a character's behaviour and lines in the game, demanding to be removed as inappropriate. That of course was led to some trolling of another kind.

But what does a troll seek? A rise over others and attention. It's normal. The funny thing is that some might be delightful and amusing, while others... Well, not really worth our time except from the usual mob gif.

Finally, to be honest, I'm studying social behaviour as part of my studies for about 10 years now and I still don't get trolls most of the time. Nowadays, I just scroll further down to other posts as I force myself to believe the illusion that only a pre- teen or teen meltdown tantrum would cause trolling.

Most of the trolling here comes from one single person that just keeps making new accounts. Might be some others but it's mostly that one person.

Keeps sending nasty pm's to regulars as well. Sometimes including **** pics. Not the best of **** pics though. Too bad. Cause there's like a whole world of good quality **** **** out there.

I just ignore any post that I consider to be from someone who is trolling, I've believe that is the best response to it as they are trying to get you to reply to their post and continue from there to try and get you down to their level.

Did you have the real stories or the Disney version? In my recollection there's always someone being rolled down a hill in a barrel full of spikes at the end of those. ..that or being forced to dance in red hot shoes until they die.

    Probably trolls.

My kids are just now learning how to get around on social media. They don't get the "don't feed the trolls" thing. Oddly they think they can be defeated with logic. It really didn't help my case that the one they took on wasn't very persistent. Sometimes I think they are stupid kids with too much free access to a smart phone.

Now I will agree that Josh was quality. That doesn't come along every day. But as to quantity of trolls, really, this site is low. Take a look at comments on YouTube videos. Much higher.
