I don't know why, but I find it shocking about the EU search. As far as the age I voters, I don't care, I just have always felt they should have to pass a simple Current Affairs test before each election or vote issue. After all, a recent survey here in the US indicated that 10% of our college students thought that Judge Judy was on our Supreme Court.

You mean she isn't?!? But Morgan Freeman is the president...right?
If he was one of our choices in the upcoming election, he probably would be!

You do know if the "U.K." (which I doubt will be united for very much longer) ignores it that they'll be seen as controlling bigots? It's the 21st century Nick, not the 17th. Ireland and Scotland aren't England's subjects, although it feels like it more than occasionally.

Exactly! There's a hell of a lot of English people who love the Scottish and Irish and realise you're your own countries. You should do whatever is best for you! You're not "owned" - or if you are it probably won't be for much longer! Go NIexit and Sexit

If they name the Scottish Independence Referendum "Sexit" this time around I'm pretty positive voting in the 16-24 age range will sky rocket for leave.:lol:

Just got to correct myself on who can veto the second Scottish referendum. It's not the uk as I mentioned it's Westminster. What is Westminster I hear you ask? Westminster is the Palace of Westminster where politicians meet up to discuss new laws and legislations. So if you wondered who or what Westminster was in politics now you know. And it's these who can veto a second Scottish referendum.

Juliet I don't think there will be a re run on the eu referendum as asked for in a petition because first all the result stands. Second of if remain wins then leave would want another and so on. This could be the situation it Scotland were Nicola Sturgeon will keep having referendums until she gets her way.

Math go on mate I look forward to seeing your debates on your countries elections.

It was previously thought there wouldn't be another Scottish independence referendum in this generation Nick. But the vast majority of Scots voted to remain in the EU and as Sturgeon said I think that it's democratically unacceptable that they're dragged out with England and Wales. To apply for EU membership they'll have to be/want to be independent in my understanding. She IS looking out for the Scots' best interest.

I think a solution to this and respect Scotland's wishes from their first inference vote is keep them part of the Uk and negotiate their own deals with the eu and ask to be pat of the eu. That way they get best of both worlds.

Good idea, but IMHO, it's not going to be an acceptable solution to many Scots.

The "leavers" in the UK didn't want the EU to tell them what to do, and wanted control of their own destiny, independent of the EU.
Scotland doesn't want the UK to tell them what to do, and wants control of their own destiny, independent of the UK.

If the EU had said to Britain "no, you can't leave. We will keep you part of the EU, but we'll let you negotiate your own deals with the rest of the world so you'll get the best of both worlds", Britain wouldn't have accepted it.

So -- for those who were in favor to "leave" the EU -- what is the rationale for not seeing that Scotland has the same desire for independence from the UK as Britain had for independence from the EU?

If they were to be allowed to stay with the eu then I don't think that would be a problem for them remaining with Britain. As a sweetener give them more powers and don't have us meddling in their affairs unless it hurts us as a whole.

I'll come back on the eu part when I can answer properly. Am trying to think of a reply.

Edit answering your question without going around in circles.

Your right Britain would have accepted. That had to been on a whole not just a split Union.

Forum nerds just to point out that Britain is England Scotland and Wales. The U.K. Is the same 3 plus Northern Ireland. It would have been the whole of Ireland but Ireland split and the Republic of Ireland got their independence from the Uk. I say this because Northern Ireland voted to leave the eu too.

Oops. I thought that when someone referred to themselves as "British", they meant they were from England.

Geography is DEFINITELY not my strong suit. Like, I always thought that our "Civil War" was between the North, the South, and the Confederacy. Imagine my surprise when I read Gone With the Wind.

Well to be fair article 50 may never happen. Yesterday Cameron completely out maneuvered Boris when he quit leaving the onus on whoever takes over next. You could definitely see that it had sunk in on Boris they were expecting Cameron to take the fall but now it's all going to be on them and they realize the historical ramifications of it. Now suddenly it's talk of well there's no rush we'll get there we can take our time etcetera. .

Just want to say that as an American, I would have otherwise only have known about Brexit what the cable news shows here and a few political websites have to say. I really appreciate reading a thread from people I have a feel for who are expressing various opinions on a situation that affects them personally. Come November, I'm sure I'll be returning the favor.

If I were a mod (on ANY forum! ), I'd be making serious plans to NOT be around on November 9th. No matter what happens in that election, The Day After is gonna be a holy mess. :(

Noted. Nov 9 taking day off. Neo and Dalton can be in charge.
    LOL

Wait maybe not LOl. Now I'm upset

Here's what I've been studying for years, and it's a tad confusing.
    Britain: England and Wales
Great Britain: England Wales and Scotland
UK : England Wales Scotland and N Ireland .

However I venture to guess that only England and Wales Identify as as British.

    Score me
