If you are just looking for a cover and not a case, why not get the apple one?
I might go for a case.
Want something that will protect the thing when I am on the road or out camping. I prefer real books, but using he iPad to read is a lot easier than carting books.

You want something rugged like an otterbox?
If that's too bulky I'd just go with the Apple Smart Case
I hate the original smart cases that are just a magnet flap. Hate hate hate. Love the smart case that is actually a case with a flap. Love love love.
Definitely go with the smart case. The fact that it automatically turns on/off the device with the flap is a luxury you don't even know you want until you have it, then you can't live without it.

I'm with you there Spiff, but I hate both smart cases, I have them both and there useless, forever falling down and un clipping, stay away from Smart cases. They're more expensive and less practical. Go to staples, or look on eBay, you can find some good ones for dirt cheap prices.
Just don't let be like me. The cheapskate in me came out and bought one from Bangkok and I immediately regretted the decision. My decision is bad and I should feel bad.
My husband and I were trying to find a replacement case for our 19-month old's first gen iPad but you can't get one in stores anymore. Fun thing, they are on Amazon for $0.01 so we got 3 just to try them out and see which was best for her. With shipping, we paid less than $10 total.
(No, I didn't help her drop hers down the stairs... yet. I'll wait for the iPad 5 first, then give myself an excuse to give her mine.)
Just stay away from Apple's smart cover. I used it at first and it ended up making my iPad wonky and the people at the Apple store told me to stop using it. I couldn't stand the streaks it left on my iPad either.
I have one similar to the Griffin case, can't find a link for it.
I have the pink apple smart case with the back & magnetic flap, I love it! No complaints here. I'd recommend it. And it was cheap as hell on eBay brand new
I like my apple smart cover, never a problem, turns it on and off, no issues. I would not mind a case, but truth be told then it gets so much thicker I hate hate hate that! I want something that maintains the thiness of the ipad. Already too much to lug around when I travel. I love those book ones, but it becomes too bulky in the bag then.
I bought my online from SwitchEasy. http://www.switcheasy.com/ Pretty good, it covers the whole ipad, the front and the back. They have more different styles to check out on the site.

I like mine for the same reasons and that it converts to a stand is a nice feature. I have a letter case as well, too bulky and would only use it for travel to add extra protection.
I gave my son the iPad2 after I got my iPad4 and passed along the single front cover. I hated the magnet and the way it came off. The Smartcase is all in one and is lined up perfectly for buttons and camera.
Mine is the baby blue colour and it and the back of the iPad are laser engraved. Love love love it!!!!
check out the twelve south case. i've been using their bookbook for iphone 5 and its amazing. all leather, so it's super durable, and it looks like a book which get's a lot of attention.
I absolutely love my Kensington case for my iPad -- it comes with a built in keyboard. You can stand the iPad on it's side to type like a laptop (bluetooth keyboard). It completely protects the device -- downside $99

But my mother has an absolutely beautiful case from Portenzo (http://shop.portenzo.com/), that makes it look like a hardcover book.
I'm definitely thinking of getting one for myself.
