Usually I take a screen shot and size and crop the image for the Avatar.
My new image didn't need cropping for avatar. It cropped itself so I may have found the right size. Wondering if I could slip an animated gif in if I found one the same size and it auto cropped correctly? the image size was 1410 X 1330 72 DPI if anyone else wants to experiment. I think the problem with animated gif's is the crop thing.

Pretty sure the issue is with the crop too.
When we first found out about the gif issue I tried a bunch of stuff to get around it - all unsuccessful. Long story short if you resize a gif, (think my memory is correct) you'll remove the animation. After much, much digging, it seems it may be possible to resize a gif in the forum and keep the animation, but they have to enable a feature and tinker with the code a bit.
