Gnomes in Neighbor's Towns

Can you tap the gnomes in your friend's towns more than once per day? I do mine in the morning, but by afternoon, the box shows up again in my tasks saying to tap a gnome in a friend's town.
If you can do this more than once per day, does anyone know his far apart you can do them?

I think you can only do it once a day, but it resets at the same time so it you waited you could do it more than once in a 24 hour period. I know this happened to me on the first day of the event due to the time that it reset.
