I hate the wheel. I don't like chances. It is the only event I did not get evey prizes and I actually had to gamble donuts just to see if I can get it and I never did. I hope Ea never bring it back!
I think it's less a generational divide or lack of experience with video games and more that this sort of game doesn't lend itself well to randomness. If I wanted "excitement" based on random chance, I'd play a gambling game. This isn't a gambling game. This is a city-building game.
A lot of non-gambling games have a random aspect to it. Most notable among them are MMORPGs, which have tons of collectible items. A lot of young children's games and toys nowadays also have heavy random elements to them.
I view TSTO as a "collecting" game as much as a "city building game" and TSTO also does borrow some aspects from RPGs. Randomness is a very natural element to a game like TSTO.
Just because other games have a randomness element doesn't make it better. I generally dislike that aspect of most games, though it's more annoying in some than others.
To the extent that TSTO could be considered a "collecting" game, I think that actually cuts against it favoring the randomness. Most games that are heavy on collecting don't have limited time items that can only be obtained through random chance. Typically it's either "grind away until you get lucky" or "buy/earn it now while it's available." Combining those two features will just turn off too many players. Those that DO have that sort of thing typically have alternative ways to get them (buying outright or trading). A game that focuses on collecting and yet makes it impossible to get some parts of the collection is just creating frustration that leads to people quitting.
I have no problem with the simulated gambling aspect of this game. Wheels , boxes, treatbags or whatever mechanics EA decide to use is fine with me as long as the content is simpson related.
